The IN THE MIX series bops back into the collective unconscious with Volume 2 of The 80's Edition!
Hidden in the mix are some of the biggest music stars of the era! Some are well documented; Eddie Van Halen lending guitar to Beat It, Prince playing the guitar intro on Madonna’s Like A Prayer, or Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, & Mike Campbell backing Roy Orbison in the sessions that first brought together three of The Traveling Wilburys.
But you may have forgotten that The Everly Brothers supplied backing vocals on Paul Simon’s Graceland, or that Suzanne Vega assists with The Smithereens’ Cigarette. Even further “on the down low” are a young Jon Bon Jovi backing Ratt, and Freddie Mercury helping out Billy Squier. Johnny Marr & Kirsty MacColl contribute guitar & vocals for Talking Heads’ (Nothing But) Flowers. And, in between fist-fights, Richard Ashcroft (of The Verve) laid down vocals on Oasis’ All Around The World.
The problem with being a part of Robin Trower’s band is you’re often almost anonymous—even if you’re the lead singer! So I’m shining a light on one of Davey Pattison’s best vocal performances on Caroline.
And in the “once you hear it, the bell can’t be un-rung department”, that’s David Crosby singing in the background of Phil Collins’ Another Day In Paradise. Collins guests on Mike Oldfield’s Sheba, & the other reigning drummer of the 80’s Stewart Copeland pounds away on Peter Gabriel’s Red Rain.
In a display of good-naturedness, Mark Knopfler agreed to allow Weird Al Yankovic to parody one of his songs—one of the biggest songs of the era—on the condition that he played guitar on the track!
Downloaders are asked to share a singer IN THE MIX of a song who you couldn’t believe that you missed upon discovering their involvement.
ReplyDeleteOne of mine is on today’s comp: Freddie Mercury helping out Billy Squier on the chorus of Emotions In Motion, When I first learned it was Freddie on the chorus (in an online discussion) I wondered how I ever missed it. He stands out a mile. I guess it’s like running into your mail carrier wearing street clothes, and wondering where you know them from.

I learn something every time you post a new IN THE MIX! How about when Joe "King" Carrasco had Michael "King of Pop" Jackson on backing vocals?

I didn't know about that one, Jon! Thanks for the links!
DeleteWoW grateful to you guys for spending the research time but also know you are music nuts like me! How about Joe Williams (who I will feature soon) & Sammy Davis, Jr. backing up Lena Horne on her 1988 studio album 'The Men In My Life". At any rate I'm ready to add from cnvmp3 that Jonder bonus song which sure did surprise me like the 'Red Rain' one and a bunch of others from Stinky's hard work. You guys are the Greatest! P.S. I don't have a Mac.
ReplyDeleteI love Joe Williams! Thanks, VCMD!
DeletePeter Buck on Dream Academy's "The Party;" John Cale on The Replacements' "Sadly Beautiful" (in hindsight, it's obvious); Roger McGuinn on Mary Lou Lord's "Lights Are Changing" (second version on the Got No Shadow LP - I thought it was a good impersonation, but it's the real thing).
ReplyDeleteMore excellent singers and musicians "in the mix"!
DeleteThanks James! Those are great! (but I couldn't find the version of "Lights Are Changing" with McGuinn)
DeleteStinky - McGuinn is on this LP. MLL recorded "Lights are Changing" twice. The first version is on her self-titled debut LP. McGuinn did not play on that version.

It might just be me but when I downloaded this, there were no files. Just me?

DeleteThank you!
DeleteWow, The Everly Brothers supplied backing vocals on Paul Simon’s Graceland?? I had no idea, despite playing that song a lot in the past...
ReplyDeleteJona Lewie's Cream Jaqueline Strawberry has Godley & Creme doing backing vocals very clearly, they also produced that song.
Thanks Stinky. Am I mistaken in something? I think I can hear Jello Biafra on Manu Chao - Viva Zapata from Casa Babylon. But I can find no confirmation.
ReplyDeleteI checked, and Jello DOES supply backing vocals on that album, Richard! Good ear!
DeleteHa, Stinky, here is the real stinker, in my haste I forgot that Manu Chao is 1994 and not for the 80s. Will you please make 90s just to include this. Manu Chao, what a great band.
DeleteI certainly will, Richard! But I've already got the first two volumes of THE 90'S done, so it won't show up for a while!
DeleteYeah, if memory serves, it lead to the Simon & Garfunkel tour where they brought The Everly Brothers out for a set in the middle of their own set. I always thought it was classy that they found a way to avoid having their #1 influence open for them. I listened to "Cream Jaqueline Strawberry" and it clearly bears the Godley & Creme stamp!
ReplyDeleteAny chance of getting the non-Apply version? Or am I just doing something wrong/stupid/being dense? Mil gracias.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what you mean by non-Apply version? I had no problem downloading the music. I zipped them into another zip file and uploaded them to another host. Try this link: https://www.imagenetz.de/c2Sgv
DeleteI meant Apple (Mac) but this is great--thank you so much!
DeleteInteresting. You found a way to bust the new Windows 11 extractor as it extracted only an empty MAC folder. I had to extract with my old WINRAR with no issues. Crazy! Also the Imagenetz new link didn't work for me as no 'download' button per the usual on Imagenetz but they are changing to be more like Bestfiles now with permanent file storage something I've been advocating to help them make money in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI'm using 7zip with no issues. I don't love the ads on Imagenetz, but there aren't many free storage options now that my Mega, Pixeldrain and Google Drive are almost full.
