THE CARPETBAGGERS were a Twin Cities area three piece made up of two guitarists and a stand-up bassist--like their biggest influence JOHNNY CASH & THE TENNESEE TWO. They’re an Appalachian echo of a time when drums weren’t allowed on The Grand Ole Opry, and their minimalist "classic country" approach would suit the single dashboard speaker of a late fifties roadster just fine.
They were prolific & prodigious songwriters. On the first two albums, acoustic guitarist John Magnuson wrote the bulk of their material, with bassist Rich Copley also contributing. By their third album Sin Now... Pray Later, electric guitarist Mike Crabtree stepped up. (Of Mike, The Star-Tribune said: “Crabtree’s humble, single-note guitar playing creates warm country melodies with a subtle rockabilly feel”). They all sang, & their voices blend together as if they were brothers.
Their songs range from downright depressing; Absent Without Leaving, to laugh-out-loud funny; My Jeannie’s In A Bottle, to surprisingly dark; Always A Pallbearer (Never A Corpse). We're talking Leon Payne dark. Songs by Roy Drusky, Bobby Lee Trammell, Marvin Rainwater, and Bill Anderson were scattered imperceptibly among the band’s own compositions.
Their first album was on Clean Records in 1992, their second was on Twin-Tone, and they went on to Hightone Records for their final album in 1996. For a few years there, you were safe buying ANYTHING released on the Hightone label.
The band did three tours with Son Volt and shared the stage with such notables as Los Lobos, Alison Krauss, The Jayhawks, and The Gear Daddies.
John Magnuson still records, and keeps a busy performing schedule. Nowadays, there’s an Austin band called The Carpetbaggers—proof that you can’t keep a good name down.
I loved the band from day one, but my appreciation has only deepened. I find it to be unparalleled driving music, so I go back to their catalogue regularly. I’ve probably listened to this "best of" at least 60 times since I put it together twenty years ago—two or three times a year at least—which is why I decided to post it.

ReplyDeleteWhat are your THREE FAVORITE bands (or albums) to listen to on a long drive?
I feel passionless lists are no fun to read, so more than three bands will exclude the commenter from winning a coveted no-prize. :)

Thank you Stinky
ReplyDeleteMy favorite car music, depends on my mood, Alvin Lucier, Basic Channel, Franco et le TPOK
My pleasure, Richard. I'll check those out--all three of them are new to me. Especially Alvin Lucier. Anyone who studied the use of brain waves in live performance has earned three minutes of my time.
DeletePlease take more than three minutes. His Strawberry Fields recreation (Nothing Is Real) is worth a whole listen, and on TZ his Orpheus Variations are posted.
DeleteHis record 'I'm sitting in a room' is way ahead. One of these days I'm gonna redo it
SITTING IN A ROOM is what I checked out. If I took that on a long drive, I’d have to be a passenger, because I'd nod out for sure!
DeleteSTinky I am floored by this post being from MN but also since I had uploaded yesterday next weeks posts which include a repost for JC & TTT but also when gettin' another country comp from the box last night...out I pulled two Bill Anderson records to add to a CD post in 2023 both were put in the rip pile last night for next week! Have seen the Carpetbaggers a handful of times and the Roe Family Singers even more and you just know they are highly gifted songwriters. O.K. now the Q you posed to us this week: Charlatans U.K. (Only One album) is one from actually using on a road trip once putting it on at the KFC motel original location and it did the trick as those miles just blurred away with a bro in the car. what else what else....Barrry White w friends on annual canoe trip was a good one and then wildcard third maybe Linda Lewis discog or somethaaang. Hey thanks again, going to make this a fave too thanks to you! Cheers bud
ReplyDeleteCheers, VCMD! You used a descriptive phrase that I should have expressed in my question: "those miles blurred away", which is the point of driving music for me. I fell in love with mix tapes when I had to drive long distances for work. Some of them consistently served up 90 minutes that whipped past--like you'd fast-forwarded TIME.
DeleteEven with more hours on southern roads than some long-haul truckers, I had NO idea there was a Kentucky Fried Chicken Motel! Or that the original restaurant (in Corbin Kentucky) sported a sample hotel room in it to "sell" staying in the roadside hotel to the patrons! The Colonel was wise well beyond herbs and spices.
Thanks for scratching my trivia itch.
High praise for the Carpetbaggers from both Stinky and VCMD for a band that is brand new to me. I know what I'll be listening to this weekend!
ReplyDeleteThree artists with a lot of mileage on my car stereo: Little Axe, Mark Lanegan, and the New Pornographers.
I really like The New Pornographers' Together on a long drive, Jon. To my ear, it's very Beatlesque. I'll have to check out Little Axe on your recommendation.
DeleteLittle Axe is great!
DeleteThanks
ReplyDeleteDe nada, Rob! Thank you for commenting!
DeleteA new band for me, but this looks very promising, thanks Stinky! On the road music nowadays is usually a random mix, but if I have to choose a single album, I'd go for J.J. Cale's 5!
ReplyDeleteJ.J. Cale IS great driving music! Thanks, Koen,.
DeleteThis looks right up my alley.
ReplyDeleteLike Koen, I would probably go for a driving mix of some sort, but as far as artists go: Can't go wrong with the Boogie Doobies, personally I'd roll with the Goo Goo Dolls (specifically this compilation of mine: https://onebuckrecords.blogspot.com/2024/04/lets-remember-good-old-days-of-johnny.html) and something Americana or folk-pop that you can sing or hum along to, maybe Gordon Lightfoot. A good driving album: Son Volt's "Trace" comes to mind..
I'm going to have to give you the no-prize for THE GOO GOO DOLLS, OBG (great driving music!) and you even included a convincer.
