IN THE MIX Vicki Peterson Edition Vol. 1 Bangles PSYCHO SISTERS Continental Drifters

IN THE MIX Vicki Peterson Edition Vol. 1

I’ve loved THE BANGLES since day one.  They perfected a mixture of jangle pop, folk, psychedelic garage rock, and Beatlesque harmonies that I never get tired of, and when I saw them live on their reunion tour, they really delivered.

Guitarist VICKI PETERSON sang lead on maybe a third of the band’s songs, and she wrote, or co-wrote, a lot of them.  I was surprised to discover (in my researching this post) that one of my favorites by The Bangles; Hero Takes A Fall was one of the first songs she wrote with Susannah Hoffs.

IN THE MIX Vicki Peterson Edition Vol. 1 starts off with an early collaboration between Australia’s HOODOO GURUS & THE BANGLES.  They also backed TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS.

Aside from her Banglemates, Peterson’s voice blends best with SUSAN COWSILL’s (her sister-in-law) with whom she formed THE PSYCHO SISTERS.  The two originally supplied guest vocals for THE CONTINENTAL DRIFTERS, and were asked to join the group which also included Peter Holsapple of The dBs, & Mark Walton of The Dream Syndicate.

PETERSON is a born collaborator—and a fantastic harmony singer.  She’s also sang background vocals on recordings by REDD KROSS, GIANT SAND, & JOHN DOE, & I’ve included a track from her newest & highly recommended release Long After The Fire (with her husband, JOHN COWSILL) on bandcamp as a download, a CD, or on vinyl:  Vicki Peterson & John Cowsill After The Fire

I’ve mixed in some live performances.  Three tracks by THE CONTINENTAL DRIFTERS were recorded in New Jersey bars, two by THE PSYCHO SISTERS recorded live on L.A.’s KCSN FM.

  1. Downloaders are asked to take part in our discussion.

If you don’t have anything to say on the topic, we ask that you simply say “Thanks”. Last week's share was unavailable anywhere else, & the comment section was pretty lax.

To feel good about downloading IN THE MIX Vicki Peterson Edition Vol. 1, we request you share your ONE choice for the most underrated “second banana” in a band (leave some for the next visitor like you do on Halloween when there’s a bowl of candy out front).

Vicki is MY choice because she started The Bangles, she writes her share of the songs, & she sings lead on about 1/3 of them. (Vol. 2 is already finished!)

    2. Thanks, Stinky! Met her a few times in L.A. daze, not just a fine picker (that solo in "James"!), but a lovely person.

    3. JAMES is one of my favorite BANGLES songs (& it pops up on Vol. 2!)

    4. Thank you. And, to be honest, I should have said thank you many times before.

    1. Indeed! I ran across this CHRIS HILLMAN performance the other day--I'd forgotten THE DESERT ROSE BAND did a great NICK LOWE cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEHx8YoF9JE

    1. So glad to hear it! Watch this space! There's Vol. 2 of VICKI PETERSON's IN THE MIX and I've finished one on her sister-in-law SUSAN COWSILL.

  5. George Harrison was probably a third banana.

    1. Definitely! He's a great example. George could/would have been the main songwriter in any other band!

  6. Can't think of an answer to your question but I can say thank you for the mix--RK

  7. Saw the DRIFTERS 3 times. I talked to everyone in the band except Susan as I had been in love with her since the Cowsills day.
They were easily one of the best bands I've ever seen.

    1. I never had the pleasure of seeing CONTINENTAL DRIFTERS, & they used to play one town over a lot! It's one of my biggest regrets that I never dragged my lazy ass down there. Another is that I lived within WALKING DISTANCE of a bar that rockabilly pioneer JACKIE LEE COCHRAN used to play at one night a week! You guessed it. Never saw him. :)

Thanks for joining the convo, John!

  10. Chris Scruggs (Marty Stuart) and Donny Herron (Bob Dylan) both came to mind, then I remembered that both had been in BR549.

  12. Thanks for the Continental Drifters, have always loved their music. I'm not well up on song writers, but maybe Dennis Wilson, although most of his best work was solo, rather than in the band.

  13. Many thanks, Geriatrix. I'm just getting deeper into the Drifters, as a result of this IN THE MIX.

  14. This looks great! "Milkshake Girl" is one of my favorite Giant Sand songs.

Vicki's brother Dave played drums with Redd Kross for awhile. Vicki dated Redd Kross frontman Jeff McDonald for awhile (before he married Charlotte Caffey). My nomination for second banana is Steven McDonald. His big brother Jeff writes most of Redd Kross' songs, but Steve has written some great ones, including "I'll Take Your Word For It" (one of the best songs on the self-titled double LP that came out last year).

  15. Nice one, Stinky! I'd say Chuck Berry's most important man during his Chess period was his piano player, Johnny Johnson.

    1. Absolutely. A lot of people with more music knowledge than I claim he played a major role in those Chess sides that's royalty-worthy!

    4. The place to go for a milkshake back then was a drive in called The Kiltie. There was a smiling Scotsman on the sign, wearing a tam o'shanter. Why theye chose a Scottish theme, I don't know. They kept a llama in a pen behind the drive in, and it would spit at customers. Why they had a llama, I don't know. I would have spit at people too, if I were locked up out there.

    5. The milkshake place I remember with a Scottish Theme was SANDY'S:
      https://drloihjournal.blogspot.com/2018/11/sandy-drive-ins-of-illinois.html

      Their jingle was:
I love to eat at Sandy's,
With shakes, & burgers, & fries.
The food I get at Sandy's,
Is just right for my size.

    6. Well, I'll be -- I just looked up The Kiltie, and it's still in business!

  18. The massively underrated & underappreciated Sterling Morrison, who may not exactly qualify, but close enough

Does Don Farq know you are posting potentially unauthorized Bangles content? I know it's Vicki not his stone goddess, but...tread carefully, friend.

And, yes, thank you for all you and your krewe do day in and day out--much appreciated!

    2. What a great Comp! My choice for second banana is Bobby Whitlock from Derek and The Dominos - He co-wrote six of the Layla album’s songs with Clapton, including Bell Bottom Blues, Anyday, Tell the Truth and Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?, and played acoustic guitar and sang on his solo composition Thorn Tree in the Garden. I went on a bit of a rabbit hole and bought his solo records on Vinyl. Amazing songwriter and vocalist - Cool version of Layla with his band in 1992 at the bottom line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z__-F1cOTRA. The guardian Obit is a nice tribute to a most "underrated" musician. Cheers!
