HALLOWEEN 2026 Vol. 3
We love our Halloween music here at Jonky. Unless The Creature From The Black Lagoon starts blogging, no other blog is going to serve up five different CD-length horror-filled Halloween comps. And Vol. 3 may be my favorite of them all.
PROMPTGENIX starts it off with The Thing In Grafton Woods—a story song about a creature with “skin like something dragged from hell” that maintains a genuinely creepy, atmospheric, & swampy groove. I don’t have words to describe how much I love it. Equally ethereal is Buffy Sainte-Marie’s scarily skeletal The Vampire.
My second favorite track is Rocket From The Tombs' unhinged version of the garage rock classic Strychnine. I've never seen a haunted castle with a garage, but garage music sure fits well, & makes another appearance in the form of Zombina & The Skeletons' The Count Of Five.
India Ramey and Fabienne Delsol may not have expected to land on a Halloween compilation, but I think you’ll agree their songs fit right in. So does The Hoodoo Gurus’ tale of revenge; Hayride From Hell, & Gregg Allman’s raw-boned Devil Got My Woman.
Big Boy Bloater takes a savage stab at Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ Alligator Wine. Joe Bouchard already paid tribute to Godzilla when he played with B.O.C., but now he turns his solo sights on The Wolfman. I sure hope he remembered his silver bullets.
Doing Johnny Cash one better, Sonny George recorded Hillbilly Wolfman for his Live At The Tennessee Prison For Women album. I’m not sure if he brought along a handful of pardons, but that hillbilly sure can howl. L.A. rockabilly weirdo Johnny Legend tells the tale of the House Of Frankenstein complete with ascending doo-wop “Ahh’s” provided by a choir of fallen angels. The Necromantix serve up Haunted Cathouse, and Webb Wilder blows the dust off of his classic track Hoodoo Witch.
Without a doubt, the most fun tracks are Rockapella’s Zombie Jamboree, & the always awe-inspiring Petra Haden who vocally supplies all the instrumentation in her version of Tubular Bells. Bringing to mind an entirely different kind of tubular is 38 Coffin’s Dead Surfer Girl. The Members completely tear up Jack The Ripper—thanks to their guitarist, Nigel Bennett, who definitely deserves the MVP award (Most Vibratorsesque Performance).
And dragging it all down to the dungeon is The Damned’s Wait For The Blackout, which some folks might not feel is a Halloween song. I’d argue that it's being sung by a guy dressed like Dracula.

ReplyDeleteI’d like to know your favorite monster/horror movie spoof?
One per customer please. Please leave some candy in the bowl for the next trick-or-treater.
One of mine is the BBC’s newly minted The Reluctant Vampire.

My favorite "Helloween" song is Bucket o' Blood by Big Boy Groves circa 1963.
DeleteIndisputably, it is Carry On Screaming! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060214/ featuring the frightfully foxy Fenella Fielding.
DeleteI was left alone at home one night as a nine year old (it was the 1970s) and it came on telly. I still love it.
The Return Of The Living Dead. A vehicle for a good soundtrack and one of the most memorable boobie scenes of my youth. For those days totally over the top, so well made that a lot of viewers mistook it for a serious movie. The zombie posing as a cop, also a classic.
ReplyDeleteA stone-cold classic, Richard! Often imitated, never duplicated.
DeleteI'll skip the popular movies and nominate a personal favorite. It's Student Bodies, a 1981 spoof of slasher movies (one of three made that year). It is a dumb movie, but the best kind of smart-dumb comedy.
ReplyDelete"Who could have done these murders?"
"I don't know! It could have been anybody."
"Well, it can't be anbody. It's gotta be somebody."
"Of course it's somebody. But that somebody could be anybody."
I feel like I may have seen Student Bodies on VHS! Thank you for weighing in, James.
DeleteThe Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror episodes are my favorite horror spoofs. One that comes to the top of my head is the The Babadook parody.
ReplyDeleteGreat one, Anonymous. It's amazing that a cartoon that started as a throw-away on THE TRACEY ULLMAN SHOW has become one of the longest running TV Shows in the US. I love the TREEHOUSE OF HORROR, too.
DeleteMy favourite horror spoof would be Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, as a parody of the original Frankenstein movie and then some. The scene with the old blind guy is sure to make you piss laughing.
ReplyDeleteA classic like most of Mel's early films including the Producers, Blazing Saddles and Silent Movie and still funny these days.
J from Europe.
HEY J from Europe! I couldn't agree more!
ReplyDeleteCry Of The Mutiliated...well, it seems like a spoof
ReplyDeleteThanks, Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that you're thinking of SHRIEK OF THE MUTILATED:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072156/?_ssoLoop=1
I love Shriek of the Mutilated. Yeah, it’s definitely meant to be a black comedy, if not a spoof.
ReplyDeleteThat movie is a great time capsule of 70s no-budget grindhouse movies that weren’t directed by true visionaries like Tobe Hooper or George Romero.
Along with “Popcorn” by Hot Butter being used in a party scene, my favorite bit in that movie is a stuffed armadillo appearing in the foreground of one scene for no apparent reason.
I'm gonna have to watch it, James. Just to say that I've seen a movie that brings it's own POPCORN!
DeleteAnother great collection, Stinky! "Wait For The Blackout" absolutely deserves its place here. I'll go with TUCKER AND DALE VS. EVIL. Two good-natured rednecks are mistaken for murderous hillbillies when a group of college students visit a rural cabin. Gore mixed with slapstick, and clever twists on horror movie tropes.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jon. I started watching TUCKER & DALE, & I liked it, but I got called away, & never got around to finishing it. I will on your recommendation.
ReplyDeleteBlack Sheep, an Australian or New Zealand film.......really weird and funny. Late night viewing for sure!
ReplyDeleteThanks for that suggestion, Sam Elliot's Mustache. It's nice to see you in these parts.
DeleteBlack Sheep looks like my kinda movie! ("My kinda movie" including the Irish horror comedy "Grabbers", the Norwegian film "Trollhunter", and the Swedish slasher satire "The Conference").
DeleteNice to be seen Stinky! I wander around these parts from time to time, spreading mirth and mayhem and occasional musical interludes, wherever I may roam.
DeleteI remember coming across 'Grabbers' awhile back. I do not think I finished watching it for some reason. Time to re-visit that one.
DeleteFor the uninitiated JONKY visitor (& I suggest you stay that way--the jailhouse branding that's part of the ceremony is a bit much, if you ask me) SAM ELLIOT'S MUSTACHE is a frequent contributor over at VOODOO WAGON where he shares his carefully digitized collection of radio shows with the unwashed masses!
DeleteHere's a recent one with BERLIN and the criminally underrated ROBERT HAZZARD:
https://voodoowagon.blogspot.com/2024/02/nbc-source-83-20-berling-robert-hazard.html
Yeah, the jailhouse branding is a bit much. It has definitely has left a mark on my psyche....and my ass. You gotta find a better placement. And in regards to your comment about the Berlin/Hazard show, yes Hazard was a bit underrated, but he got to have his moment. And being a Philly guy, we had a nice little run or artists get to make an album or to for the masses. So climb into The Wagon, sit a spell, bring your favorite libation and listen to some gnarly toons. And watch out for Mr. Hand.
DeleteWhile the movie Stan Helsing was an abomination it did provide my favorite GIF over on Themes From Great Cities; Desi Lyric copping a feel of a disgusted Diora Bairds left breast. Those fleeting seconds being pure cinema in a 90 minute crapfest.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, Young Frankenstein.
The same Desi Lydic who rocks a suit and tie at the desk of "The Daily Show" -- she's so cool!
DeleteDiora Baird is the kind of sugar papa likes, Dr. Zhivago. "What knockers!"
ReplyDeleteGood collection,
ReplyDeletegreetings .
Greetings, Orlando!
