SAN FRANCISCO PUNK: Cover Songs

This set of SF bands playing cover songs starts with Novak's version of "the first synth punk song" ("Hello I Love You"), followed by Psycotic Pineapple's cover of "You're Gonna Miss Me".  We miss you, Roky.

Elvis, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones are represented, as well as the Sonics, the Stooges, and the Sparkletones.

Some of these songs are live at Mabuhay Gardens (Sleepers and The Lewd), the Deaf Club (the Offs, DK's and Tuxedomoon), and elsewhere (Junior Executives, Toiling Midgets, and Pearl Harbour).

Snakefinger covered "Jinx" (originally by his labelmates Tuxedomoon) while performing in Australia. Plain Jane & The Jokes take on local legends the Dils with an irreverent version of "Class War".

The time frame ranges from 1976 (when the Residents skewered "Satisfaction") to 1984 (when Joe Pop-O-Pie and members of Faith No More took "Truckin" down a Flippery slope).

Thanks to Draftervoi for the Wasp Women's synth punk version of "Vicious"!

  2. I'm glad to have been able to help. I've got a few more singles I can send you, down the road...that might be of interest: the Touchtones "Sorry, We're Passe" and Start (a mod band from the East Bay).

    1. Thanks! The music you've sent me so far is both enjoyable and enlightening (as are your comments).

I don't know if other readers are getting tired of this San Francisco series, but I'm not done yet...

  3. Interesting factoid: Michael A. Lucas of the Junior Executives and The Blank (Killed By Death #16) plays bass in the Phantom Surfers and was the bassist for the reunited Crime (who made the album "Exalted Masters"). Lucas had a gothic synth project in the early 80's under his initials MAL (the albums Compendium Maleficarum and The Preacher From The Black Lagoon). MAL guitarist Johnny Bartlett is also in the Phantom Surfers.

  4. I wish now that I had included "Talk Talk" by JJ180 or The Nuns. Both are great cover versions...
