In this final set, Cassandra Wilson sings the blues of Muddy Waters, J.B. Lenoir and Billie Holiday; sets to music the poetry of Maya Angelou ("Equality") and Ishmael Reed ("Sacred Ground"); and pays tribute to Duke Ellington and Stephen Sondheim. Musical collaborators include Don Byron, Courtney Pine, Steve Coleman, Dave Holland, and Mark O'Connor.
One of the things I admire most about Cassandra Wilson is the diversity of her work: she seems equally at home with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, avant jazz groups like M-Base or David Murray's Black Saint Quartet, and the alt-country of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

ReplyDeleteBack in the days of Willard's Wormholes, I shared this mix of covers performed by Cassandra Wilson. Here it is again:

That about covers it! Well done! - Stinky
ReplyDeleteThanks, my friend. What a voice she has! Best wishes to you for the winter holidays and the new year.
DeleteI just found this post and was elated to find the links still active. Ms Wilson doesn't get the recognition and respect she deserves. She is such a great interpreter of songs across a wide range genres and styles. And unlike so many, she understands that the song is the star and she is so adept at wring new meaning from familiar works that her version often equals and occasionally surpasses the original.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post
I'm glad you found it! I agree completely with your sentiments regarding her artistry as an interpreter. Some of the cover songs she has done are the most beautiful versions I've heard, like her "Harvest Moon" and "Skylark".
