More Car Trouble Every Day

Stinky's got car trouble again. Twenty-six troubled tunes sharing a theme of ignition issues, piston problems, bothersome belts... every headache under the hood. If you have a car, you know the story.

Once again, Stinky has combed the crates for classic songs of car trouble, as well as rarities like "This Old Bomb Of Mine" and "Put Your Brakes On, Papa".

There are some oldies but goodies (another Jan & Dean tune, and two Chuck Berry covers), plus some new wave and punk rock (Dead Kennedys, Naked Raygun, and Billie Joe Armstrong).

There are famous names, old friends like Al Anderson (from NRBQ) and Billy Bremner (from Rockpile), and more than a few artists who are new to me. I sent Stinky a half dozen nominees for Volume 3. He appreciated all the comments on Volume 1, so hopefully some of your favorites and mine will make the cut. Keep the suggestions coming, and drive friendly!

  6. Many Thanks to Nancy for playing along--we love getting suggestions and input!

It's hard FOR ME to stick to the theme, and I'm the one who's obsessing.

For instance, I included Gene Vincent's PINK THUNDERBIRD on Volume 1 and upon re-listening to the compilation, I realized Gene doesn't have any problems with all he's got. His best friend (in real life) Eddie Cochran sings about PROBLEMS with his car in SOMETHIN' ELSE. Eddies car trouble is that he feels he NEEDS to get the car he's singing about—in order to get the girl that he wants.

Gene is trying to coerce the object of his intentions with all the cars that he ALREADY HAS. (Thunderbird, house, bank account "filled with green.") No car trouble there! Gene has GIRL trouble; and more to come if all that he owns is the main focus of his intended. Hey, that's a good theme for the NEXT compilation! GIRL TROUBLE!

Actually, Mary touched on a theme that I've already compiled TWO volumes of, & have enough for 4-5 volumes EASY: THE BACKSEAT! So watch this space!

Back to the theme at hand, and my approach to a theme:

The core of my approach was born on a D.C. area radio station; WMNF on which a DJ named WEASEL had a feature that spread from there across the whole country: MY THREE SONGS.

Weasel would play three songs with a common theme, or as he said: “light motif" running through them, that wasn't immediately obvious, and the listeners rushed to be the first to call in with the common thread of the three songs.

My compilations are that way, only in reverse. It's up to you, the listener to decide HOW this song fits into the theme that you're given UP FRONT.

For example, watching a KINKS documentary last night, I decided I'm going to include The Kinks' SUNNY AFTERNOON on a future volume in hopes people will listen intently and say: "Stinky's LOSING it... there isn't even a car IN this song!!!"

Then along comes the lyric: "My girlfriend's run off with my car, and gone back to her ma and pa." DING! The judges say they will accept it. A stolen car definitely qualifies as CAR TROUBLE.

In my mind, these clever departures not only keep things interesting but also allow a wider variety of music to be incorporated—resulting in a better listening experience. And remember all the collections you get from me are fully guaranteed. Just send them back, if you’re not 100% satisfied and FREE will be credited back to your account. ;)

So have fun with your suggestions, and PLEASE keep them coming Mary and ViacomClosedMeDown! I love it!

Jonder nailed it! Off to SOUND EFFECTS for The Dickies! I’m nothing if not musically omnivorous!

    Yer Pal,
    Stinky
