Stinky made a nice cover image for this set of songs written by Dave Alvin but sung by The Chipmunks other performers. I bet nobody ever made a joke like that when Dave and Phil were kids.
Some of the songs are from Dave's solo career, some date back to The Blasters, and a couple were recorded by X. Some are from The Blasters' contemporaries: Los Lobos, Dwight Yoakam, and the late Country Dick Montana of the Beat Farmers. Dave appears on a few of these tunes: playing guitar, singing, maybe leaning back in the producer's chair and pushing the faders with his boot heels.
If I had my shit together, I could have posted this in time for the 4th of July, but I prefer to mull over my ideas until they grow stale. Like a bad joke.

Thanks for all the Dave!
ReplyDeleteSo, the wife n' draftervoi are watching Justified a second time last week, and guess who turns up? Yeah, Dave Alvin. Not connected to the plot in any real way, they just go out to a bar to see him play.
ReplyDeleteDave is everywhere, just like Elvis was!
DeleteThanks for this latest Dave-related volume.
ReplyDeleteIt's never too late for a bad joke or a good collection of songs (unlike a bad limerick?) -- thanks Jonder!
ReplyDelete(re above comment -- I mean mine, not yours! Your limerick was brilliant as always!)
ReplyDeleteI stole mine from Ogden Nash. Yours was an original!
DeleteI've been looking forward to this compilation! - Stinky
ReplyDeleteWe should probably keep the momentum going and do a Dave Alvin episode of Gnarly Guitarists, featuring all the bands he's been part of.
DeleteI meant to note somewhere (might as well put it here) that John Doe cowrote "Little Honey", Tom Russell cowrote "Haley's Comet", and Chris Gaffney cowrote "'68". Dave Alvin wrote the other songs in this collection all by his damn self.
Another awssome share.Thanks Jonder!
ReplyDeleteShakin' Stevens' version of MARIE MARIE is so great partly because that's Albert Lee on guitar (another guy who needs a Gnarly Guitarist compilation) and Geraint Watkins on piano! - Stinky
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely fabulous! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteFolks who love Dave Alvin (and new listeners who want to know what the fuss is about) will enjoy Nate Rabe's compendium from the C90 Lounge:
