For Neurotica, Jeff and Steven McDonald were joined by Robert Hecker on lead guitar (ex-Chemical People) and Roy McDonald from The Muffs on drums. It's the same lineup that reunited to make 2012's Researching The Blues. Tommy Erdelyi produced Neurotica.
In 2018, Merge reissued Teen Babes From Monsanto, 1984's Redd Kross mini-album of cover songs (plus a remake of RK's "Linda Blair"). It was Jeff and Steven's version of Pinups. At that time, their drummer was Dave Peterson (Vicki's brother). Geza X produced.
Today we have a homemade tribute to Teen Babes, which I call Tween Baes From Tostardo. Some of the artists predate Redd Kross, some are contemporaries, and others are more recent.RK cancelled their 2022 European tour, but Steven is kriss krossing America with The Melvins (who are known to perform Neurotica's "Janus, Jeanie and George Harrison" now and then).
If you're driving down the highway in your Trans Am custom T-top car, and you see some long-haired friends of Jesus in a chartreuse microbus, it could be Buzz, Dale, and Steven.

I have been listening to a TON of Redd Kross recently, so this is a welcome latest mix from you, Jonder. Thanks, my dood.
ReplyDeleteFer sher, man. Redd Kross are totally bitchin. There is a cool episode of "Turned Out A Punk" (podcast hosted by Damian "Pink Eyes" from Fucked Up) with Jeff and Steven as guests. Steven ends up asking a lot of the questions, trying to figure out how Jeff got into music outside the mainstream when they were kids. A lot of their influences are reflected in the songs they chose to cover. They also talk about their early years hanging with Black Flag, how they became involved in the Paisley Underground, and their reaction to the rise of glam metal in Hollywood. It's a very entertaining listen. How many rock band brothers get along as well as Jeff & Steve? Certainly not Ray & Dave Davies, or Liam & Noel Gallagher...

Just remembered Ron & Russell Mael. They get along! Steven McDonald was Sparks' bassist for several years.
DeleteI needed this so bad! Thank you Jonder once again man!!!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I actually bought and ripped the Muskrats album in order to get their version of Linda Blair. It's actually part of a live medley that starts with Bad Company's Shooting Star, and then goes into Cashing In by Minor Threat. I need to post the whole thing -- it's funny. And it was released on Subterranean Records, one of my favorite labels!

I just got a new copy going to rippost it. Hope you don't mind. Had to get a triphop CD from Olive in 97 to meet minimum so that should appeal to Nathin' Nothin' too but yeah you guys got your own copies I think! Thanks for this no doubt...got me on a good thread
DeleteThanks not only for the RK tribute collection but also for cluing me in to the "Turned Out A Punk" podcast.
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading all my ramblings!
DeleteHell yeah! Teen Babes was a great album and the Brothers Macdonald have always had a great choice of covers. Redd Kross & White Flag shows were the best (second only to Red Cross / Nip Drivers shows!!). I'll have to check out that podcast. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteMrDave, I was hoping that you would see this! If you don't have the Neurotica reissue, you should definitely get it. It has a demo version of "Tatum O'Tot and the Fried Vegetables" that was previously unreleased.
DeleteThanks for the heads-up -- I did manage to grab that 35th Anniversary Reissue but haven't given it a listen yet because Neurotica was a bit of a let down for me, maybe because of the production. I'll need to give the demos a listen -- TOTATFV is probably a top 10 song for me and I hadn't even noticed that the demo version was on there! Thanks!
Delete"Tatum O'Tot", "Notes and Chords" and the Teen Babes EP are the transition between the early (sloppy) Red Cross and the professional musicians who we now know as Redd Kross. I have a pet theory that Pussy Galore and Royal Trux listened to Born Innocent just as often as Exile on Main Street.
DeleteIn the podcast, Jeff talks about the influence of John Waters (whose first book Shock Value came out in 1981, the year before Born Innocent). I think reading Shock Value probably influenced Jeff in choosing to cover "Cease to Exist" and "Look on up at the Bottom". John Waters wrote a lot in Shock Value about filmmakers like Russ Meyer and Herschell Gordon Lewis, as well as how entertaining the Manson murder trial was for him. And maybe Redd Kross inspired Axl to buy his Manson shirt.
Hi Jonder Can you add my blog to your BlogList? Thanks in advance.
