Here's a video of Stevie Wonder demonstrating to David Frost the capabilities of the talk box and keyboard, and another of Roger Troutman, who used a talk box and a Minimoog to create Zapp's signature sound.
Roger is featured on almost half of today's Talk Box Funk tracks -- with Zapp, Scritti Politti, 2Pac, Kool Keith, and Keith Sweat. Roger and Zapp were a major influence on the West Coast "G Funk" sound of Dr. Dre, DJ Quik, Warren G, and others. "More Bounce To The Ounce" (a classic of talk box funk) has been sampled in over 300 songs.

Great videos. Thank you both for the Talkbox fix!
ReplyDeleteWhat a long, strange and talkative trip it's been! Thanks for being part of it.
DeleteThank you so much -- including for the video links!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely out of my wheelhouse now but what have I got to lose (besides what's left of my sanity)? Thx!
ReplyDeleteIt's good to get out of the wheelhouse once in awhile -- stretch your legs, and take in some fresh air and new sounds!
DeleteMrDave, you are the only person I know who will appreciate this level of nerdiness: last night I dreamed about a new Redd Kross album. They recorded in England and filmed the music videos in a disused amusement park called "The Master's Green". While they were in Britain, Steven participated in the reality show "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here". And the band started playing that horrible REO Speedwagon song "Take It On The Run" in concert as a joke.
Hahahaha That's awesome! Echoes of "Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park"! Sounds like a great way to pass the night :)
DeleteDope-ass shiiiiit Jonder!!! Forgot about that whole Zapp thaang quite a cool video on Roger Troutman and Stevie!!! Careful, I got a double REO on deck along with a compilation they were in....still avoiding the records by them my sister had that everyone has heard...curious what they sounded like on this earlier double before all that since I could never buy into that well-worn glazed over stuff spit out by hit radio way too much while growing up.
ReplyDeleteWell-worn, glazed over, and spit out is a good description of REO's hits!
