Here's a bunch of cover versions of the songs from Blob's beloved double album Street Legally Blond. It's not an anniversary thing, nobody died, and it's not Blob's birthday. Haven't posted anything in awhile, and had this on deck -- that's all.
A few great funk and soul divas are here: Roberta Flack, Merry Clayton, and Patti LaBelle (check out Patti's producer and Automatt founder David Rubison's credits).
There are a few mavericks (R. Stevie Moore, Beck, and Robyn Hitchcock), a bit of blues (Greg Brown and Deborah Coleman), and a touch of jazz from an instrumental combo called Absolutely Sweet Marie.
Mud Boy & The Neutrons hunker down with Jason & The Scorchers and Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs. Emma Swift is followed by French singer-actress Valérie Lagrange (who is backed by The Sinceros).
I couldn't decide between two "Rainy Day Women", so they're both here: Merry Clayton's version (produced by the Headless Hero of the Apocalypse himself) and a great one by The Selecter (who are back with a new album!). Fifteen songs in all, in strict LP order.

I'll give it a spin. The original versions are always best but when you've heard the original for 20, 30, 40, 50 years a good cover version can be both familiar and new. Like comfort food. Thanks Jonder.
ReplyDeleteI always find it interesting to hear what other folks can do with a good song, especially someone with a great singing voice. According to SecondHandSongs, "Just Like A Woman" is the most frequently covered B on B song, followed by "I Want You" and "Rainy Day Women". "Absolutely Sweet Marie" is #4, and "Stuck Inside of Mobile" edges out "Visions of Johanna", "Sad Eyed Lady" and "Most Likely You Go Your Way" for #5.

Even though he made a pact with the devil on his classic 60 minutes Ed Bradley interview, I still like the guy from my home state and memorized his Stuck inside a mobile hit song words back in grade school so he was a good teacher thanks Jonder!! P.S. I didn't build a fire on main street and shoot it full of holes but I did stand in the middle of the street at 7 corners at U of MN when the Twins won the World Series in 1987 by myself in the middle of the celebration which kind of reminds me of that lyric. One of my older brothers the writing teacher had a thick book of his lyrics in his room next to mine that I would borrow time to time.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of the Twins, I remember their 1991 World Series vs. the Atlanta Braves, and what an incredible player Kirby Puckett was! Unbelievable.

ReplyDeleteBut why Guam? Guess you had to be there.
DeleteToday's post has a fancier poster. Yes, the 1991 series even better and even more celebration! https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=3575003236119250&set=a.1826589090960682
ReplyDeleteThis photo is priceless of Scarlet Rivera and Bob sans the harmonica and violin before she got involved with Desire probably on break in studio... https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=3517865055166402&set=a.1826589314293993
ReplyDeleteAs usual for 'various artist' comps, some stuff (and artists) hit more and better than others, but an impressive mix of styles'n'stuff here and a good listen. Thanks, Jonder.
ReplyDeleteThanks for giving it a listen! There are several commercially available tributes to the album, including the inevitable Mojo Magazine collection:

This was my first Dylan LP and It's still my favorite. Thanks for this comp.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites too. It was very cool to hear Robyn Hitchcock describe "Visions of Johanna" as "the song that made me want to write songs."
DeleteThanks Jonder -- always willing to give your comps a spin!
