More More More Fun Fun Fun

Thanks to helpful readers like Berni, Crab Devil, One Buck Guy, steVe, and our own Koen, another set of songs was assembled to complement the first two

The initial goal was to compile songs to fit the theme without looking up anything online. This resulted in some significant omissions that I really should have remembered (the Beach Boys and Motley Crue, for example).

Fun, Fun, Fun includes all the great songs that readers suggested, plus some that came to me after posting the first two sets.

This time around, I allowed myself to search the internet.  I'd wonder, "Is there a song called Kill Kill Kill?" and then look it up.  Other titles seemed to summon themselves unbidden, an example of the frequency illusion. When you think about one thing, you begin to see examples of it everywhere, and you wonder if it's more than a coincidence. Reading about music nearly every day, it isn't unusual to encounter song titles that fit the theme.  One day in the comments section on Babs' blog, two titles were mentioned that fit the theme ("Jeanie Jeanie Jeanie" and "Drink Drink Drink").

Today's second set is called Rock, Rock, Rock.  Some song titles are present on both of these collections.  They aren't cover songs; instead, they are what Stinky calls Doppelnamers -- different songs with the same title.  There are a few cover songs here, including Therapy's version of "Gimme Gimme Gimme" (the ABBA song, not the Black Flag one).

Happy Birthday to Iggy Pop!  Other artists on today's comps that have been featured elsewhere on the blog include Willie Dixon, Mel Torme, and Barrence Whitfield & The Savages.

  2. 2 more cool compilations, thanks again! Now if someone would find a way to sneak in another 24 hour in a week to really listen to all these goodies... Any suggestions appreciated!

  4. I always think of the Big Boys song "Fun, Fun, Fun" when I see it....certainly not the Beach Boys anymore. Thanks Gents!

    1. The Big Boys sounded like they were having more fun in the studio than the Beach Boys -- especially without a dad like Murry Wilson to boss them around!

    1. Well dang, Berni! You're hired!

I had a time finding the song "Frown Frown Frown". Justin Kalk has changed his band name, and I ended up capturing a stream from his Soundcloud. Great tune though, as are the other songs you nominated!

    2. Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys! I've seen these guys in concert a cool...*checks notes* whoa 23 years ago...tempus fugit, mi amigos, tempus fugit...

    3. I'm hired? Does it pay well? Lol
I thought a couple of those new ones might be tricky to locate so I included where I found them. I'm glad you enjoy the suggestions!

    4. Well, I make nothing, and Stinky and Koen each get half of that. But I can double that offer, since (between me and you) I think they're only in it for the fame. There's holiday overtime, and occasional use of the company jet. No vision or dental -- so floss daily and limit your screen time!

    5. Such a deal! Only if I can take all the vacation time that I want though.

  7. Thanks!

The mixes themselves are wonderful, and your comments/notes are leaving me with plenty of food for thought, thought, thought -- which (since we are, after all, talking about me, might not necessarily be a good, good, good thing).

I remember how you were saying you'd forgotten about a particular favorite by Grace Jones, even though it's a song that you love. Well, well, well, something similar happened to me. I not too long ago found myself in an oddly obsessive condition where pretty much ALL I could listen to for about a week was Anna Hillburg. Yet I've only just now remembered her song "Girl Girl Girl": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njHWTd0UUfs .

And having recently tried out your "Is there a song called X?" approach for myself, I believe it's my duty to mention that such methods can at times prove RISKY:

Finally, your comment (somewhere in there) about two word titles got me thinking about whole phrase, whole phrase, whole phrase titles -- I mean, until I snapped out of it and told myself, "No More, No More, No More"!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRZamQ6r8W4 .

    1. I've been wondering if I might be a little Sick, Sick, Sick in the head. I started ANOTHER list of songs that repeat the same word 4 or 5 times. I've got 13 of them, and I need More More More More.

As for "whole phrase" song titles, Ginger Wildheart has a song on his 555% album called "You're The One, You're The One, Yeah I Know You're The One, You're The One (Yeah I Know You're The One)"

Anna Hillburg has a new fan -- thank you, Crab Devil! This video is terrific: https://youtu.be/6VxR_RKaIWY?si=sk2nz5vqvZa0p0aM

Bobby Lord, Anna Hillburg, all of Berni's suggestions AND Aunt Hammy are going on Volume 5! I might even put Nathan Nothin's favorite Chinese metalcore band YAKSA on there.

    2. Since you said that you needed more more more more, there's The Wedding Present - Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. That's all I got got got got.

    3. My favorite Weddoes song! The Pogues also have a Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.

    1. You did miss it, but you don't have to miss it completely: Trio sits next to the duo of Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney, posted antecedently on the "Dance Dance Dance" compilation of 21 March 2024.

  9. Sing Sing Sing by Benny Goodman. It's over 10 minutes long. With Gene Krupa on drums.

    1. Anita O'Day's version of "Sing Sing Sing" is included in the compilation with that title. It's concise, and I love her voice. But she's no Gene Krupa.

There's another doublenamer, Sandra had a pretty sizable European hit with Hi!Hi!Hi!

    1. Crowdsourcing the wisdom of our collective musical memories is exactly the goal here! Great suggestions, OBG!

  11. Come to think of it, there's also an atrocious Italo-disco song named Tora Tora Tora, either by Dutch shlock merchants Bolland & Bolland or Numero Uno. Both are atrocious of course.

And Depeche Mode ALSO had a Tora! Tora! Tora! ...so if you want some cheesy 80s sound on volume five or six...

    1. Well done, Richard! "Music Music Music" by Teresa Brewer is not on any of the tracklists. Your eyes are A-OK, and if there were a prize it would be yours!
