Sometimes you see a name passing by and realize that you’ve seen elsewhere too…
One that kept appearing at times in my reggae collection was of Paul 'Groucho' Smykle in different functions: engineer, producer, remixer, dub master, compiler, and even artwork (as ‘Dubmaster Productions’)!
He’s a bit of an enigma, despite those credits there are very few photos of him and he hasn’t released much under his own name either.
I probably first encountered Groucho in Sly & Robbie’s A Dub Experience’s liner notes where’s he’s described as the Wicked Professor Smykle responsible for laser mixes on top of the Rhythm Twin’s tracks as well as providing a special solution of nitro rhythm!
Next was Black Uhuru’s The Dub Factor, where he performed similar magic but without fun liner notes.
Searching the Net of a Million Lies I discovered that Groucho as a youth traveled a lot between Jamaica and London, was a fan of King Tubby’s work, dabbled a bit in art and eventually started working at Island Records, first as tape copier and tea boy!
In 1979 he got his first mixing experiences and in 1980 he overdubbed successfully bass, drums, & whole heap of things on The Twinkle Brothers’ Countrymen album for Virgin.
In the 1980’s he started remixing & producing African musicians such as King Sunny Ade, Ray Lema as well as Wally Badarou.
Grouch was probably the first remixer making a dub of African music!
His only album until now is Quantum Dub Force from 2001, a rather different kind of dub.
Since then he seems to have been less active but I still managed to find a couple of interesting remixes such as those for Manu Chao and Sidestepper!
As mentioned before, he’s someone not in the spotlight, doesn’t even have a website, but this compilation is imho a decent introduction to broaden your musical horizon!

ReplyDeleteQuestion: Do you have any preferred Producers?

Note that Groucho also produced and remixed a lot of non reggae artists/groups, some of these can be found here:

I've yet to run across anyone named Groucho who isn't worth knowing, Koen. So I'll check it out, right after I have my dub for breakfast.
ReplyDeleteBon appetit Stinky!
DeleteMuch loved, and as an engineer he worked with You make me feel Mighty Real Sylvester (according to discogs)
ReplyDeleteAnd I do not have a favorite producer, maybe Jean Marie Aerts, Dolf (who isn't a producer but an engineer. And by lack of producers lots of music he engineered, he also had a big finger in the production) and a load of english Mike Thorne, Martin Hannett, John Leckie Joe Foster
You made me search high and low for African dub, and it lead me to Anthanase - He he he. Not dub, just an obscure triple
This is not exactly African dub either, but features plenty of echo & more thanks to Brian Eno & Jon Hassell a.o.: Baaba Maal: Lam Lam

How can I sit and eat my tea with all of this dub pouring out of my 18 inch screen? (Laptop, that is.) Love the concept and the internet detective work behind it!
ReplyDeleteKudos to Khayem at Dubhed as well. As far as producers, I will seek out anything touched by the hands of Dennis Bovell or Adrian Sherwood. Nathan Nothin' is currently featuring the production work of Youth (from Killing Joke), who seems to eat dub for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Thanks Jonder, it was fun putting this together.
DeleteBovell, Sherwood, and Youth are all worthy colleagues in Dub!
PGrouchoS is purveyor of out of time style and with cosmic touch sensibility best displayed in 7 minutes of KSunnnyA splendid Ja Funmi - Waka version – without a lost millisecond and enough positive aural magic to satisfy crucial parameters for existence of any inner – inter dialogue between the artist and the listener.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could have described it like that!
DeleteAnd don't forget his work as engineer or producer with Big Audio Dynamite, Colourbox and Shriekback (linked with Adrian Sherwood on Shriekback's "Mistah Linn He Dead") !
ReplyDeleteYes sure, he has done plenty of other interesting musical stuff.
