The Best Of Sharon Van Etten
Sometimes a comp has been gestating for a long time. In the case of The Best Of Sharon Van Etten there were several reasons. One is that in addition to her seven studio albums, she releases a lot of singles, and her work is really consistent, so I didn’t want to leave out something great. Another is that some of her stuff grows on you, so I kept revisiting what I came up with. There are also a lot of songs she’s done two versions of (sometimes re-recording a track as a duet) and she tours a LOT so there was a large volume of live stuff to go through.
I think the first time I became aware of her was on her Live A.V. Club performance doing justice to Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around with Shearwater. It was my affection for Tom Petty that spurred me to finish this collection. The first season of the Vince Vaughn TV series BAD MONKEY has artists doing revamped versions of Tom Petty songs, and the second track here is Sharon doing I Won't Back Down. It would have been a disservice to not include it, so it’s a good thing I took my time.
Van Etten is also an actress having appeared on the Netflix series The OA, and in the feature films Never Rarely Sometimes Always, and How It Ends. , and composed the film score for the film Strange Weather.
She’s currently billing herself as SHARON VAN ETTEN & The Attachment Theory and is performing sold out shows with Love Spells opening. On this CD-length compilation, she’s also joined by Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, & Angel Olsen.
During The Covid Lockdown she filled in for the then recently departed Adam Schlesinger for the live benefit performance Jersey 4 Jersey, which I’ll include on my upcoming Fountains Of Wayne post. Here’s a link to that wonderful performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfsjiMsRMtI
While I’m at it, here’s the Live A.V. Club clip that started it all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbP3S4pRcTE

I don't know when I heard her first. With a name like that it is sure to stick. In some parts of The Netherlands Van Etten means crazy, being From Etten. Etten, a small town in the south-west, known for a psychiatric institution.
ReplyDeleteLovely music, thank you.
My youngest asked me to take her to see Sharon live at Beacon Theater after Seventeen was a bit of a hit. I grudgingly went lol wow she did a version of Black Boys on Mopeds by Sinead O’Connor that was incredible. That was it for me bought all her albums next week
ReplyDeleteThank you for this great comp
My youngest made me take her to see sharon at beacon in nyc after seventeen became a hit. went begrudgingly, then she did an incredible cover of black boys on mopeds by sinead and i was a fan for life. thank you for great comp!
ReplyDeletei work at a theater where she opened for Conor Oberst,, while The Felice Brothers sat up front! . The thing to do at the venue is blow off the opener while drinking overpriced beers. The fools who missed her.
ReplyDeleteI can neither add to our knowledge of her greatness, or remember where I heard her first. It might have been the AV Club. I sometimes get her confused with Angel Olsen, and knowing that they collaborated will NOT help.
ReplyDeleteAnybody else get two artists mixed up with each other? I had trouble with Peter Himmelman vs Peter Hammill, but that one is alphabetically obvious. I feel like Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, and Marissa Nadler all started receiving critical praise around the same time and in the same places, but that's not fair to any of them. Anyway -- THANK YOU, Stinky!
Richard, as a regular visitor to JOKONKY you probably know of my love of trivia, and what you shared about Van Etten meaning that someone is nuts (in The Netherlands) is right up my alley. I can't wait to refer to someone as Van Etten. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks also to TCW3 for adding to Sharon's legend. Usually, FOOLS RUSH IN!
I have a LOT of artists that I get mixed up, Jon. Like Selena and Selena Gomez. That's the downside to being a "single name" artist. I'm willing to bet only the biggest Selena fan knows Quintanilla-Pérez is her last name, so it could very well BE GOMEZ. Further muddied by Jennifer LOPEZ playing her in the biopic.
Some performers like Patti Smith and Patty Smythe don't make it easy on their fans, either.
This is wonderful, thank you very much! I first came across her music on the "Save Stereogum: An '00s Covers Compilation" where she performs "Machine Gun" by Portishead.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to say that I was completely unfamiliar with SHARON VAN ETTEN and listening to her now... Thanks Stinky for this introduction!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment, Mooz. You hipped me to a track that I overlooked. I'm off to glare at myself in the mirror!
ReplyDeleteThank YOU, Koen.
ReplyDelete... didn't know her. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteSou do Brasil, minha filha a assistiu em São Paulo, no Cine Joia, e me recomendou. Gostei e acompanho seu trabalho desde então e é uma das grandes no momento. Obrigado por compartilhar.
