Growing up, I remember the radio in our house almost always being on and my Mom happily singing along from time to time with the songs she liked. In other words, the sound of the radio was an important part of my life’s background, great when my favourite songs were played, but more often lesser tunes caused me to either ignore them or grind my teeth in frustration.
Then there were the songs that (according to classmates) weren’t cool to like, but still sounded kind of neat, confusing times…
And of course deejays talking too much instead of just playing music, or ruining tracks by refusing to keep their mouth shut during the start / finish of a record, irritating.
Whether good or bad, most of us probably have similar radio-related memories; listening to your favorite station/deejay/radio-play/etc., taping songs of the radio, following sports, etc.
Over the years there have been loads of collections (vinyl/tape/cd) of songs played on the radio, either from a particular station (Radio Caroline/Veronica/etc.) or by a specific deejay (John Peel, etc.).
Here on Jokonky too, we posted a few radio collections as well:

A quick search confirmed this, no vinyl, CD, or blog post anywhere, weird!
Therefore it seemed like a perfect opportunity for Jokonky to fill this gap...
For this first compilation, I focused on a mix of lesser-known songs, but who knows what the future will bring!
I also managed to sneak in 2 covers of well-known Mexico-related radio songs as well as 2 Dutch bands...
Some songs urge you to listen or turn on the radio, others the opposite!
Bad news, suicide, lovers, girls, and spirits are all subject matter here for that wireless contraption...
Never mind, without much further ado, altogether now:

ReplyDeleteQuestion: Share one of your memorable (or deplorable!) radio experiences!
Here's mine... Late 1970's, I finally got a decent (imho) radio-cassette recorder and more live concerts are broadcasted than ever before. That evening there was a Simple Minds concert on the radio and I had bought some new blank C-60 cassettes (C-120 were more suitable but unfortunately tended to drag after a while). Show time, the deejay gave some background info about the concert and I pressed 'record'! To my horror after about 10 minutes the deejay suddenly interrupted the music with a short message: 'Do not record this concert, only listen for pleasure!' This happened several more times and as a result my recording was ruined... Later I discovered that some record companies had complained about the broadcasts as the quality was usually excellent and some ended up on bootleg lp shortly afterwards! Bummer...
Hmm, no Mexican Radio by Wall Of Voodoo?
ReplyDeleteAh, you have the Groupo Sportivo version of Mexican Radio — cool. Only saw the artist list, but now that I’ve DL’d the album I heard it. Forgotten it’s on their Back To 19 Mistakes lp.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Koen. I very much miss the Dolly Dots. Other notables The Selector and Harry Chapin (As the morning DJ on W.O.L.D.)
ReplyDeleteLet me tell you about my radio experiences. I don't know old I was when the second time I noticed Alvin Lucier would be on the radio. I had heard of him and he was weird. One of the weirdest things I had known till then. Concert on the radio, tape ready and pressed rec. I was totally mesmerized and when it ended my taped was stopped and I had not noticed. Played it back and the sound was half speed. Great concert ruined by not pushing the buttons right. Recently I recorded it on pc.
And it is now a spooky drone. by Alvin "Half Speed" Lucier.
My fondest memory is an avant grade special by VPRO radio The New York Day. The concept was a number of New York artists giving relatively short gigs in Rotterdam, They would do their performance a number of times again and again while the public walks around Rotterdam from one venue to the other. And when the day was done you could have been to all. everything was set up in the evening for a final round, live on the radio. One of the artists had a very quiet performance, with children walking about and he had his microphone on a lasso (but here I start guessing), anyway the performance started and the radio presentor did not know what to do. Since it was radio you could not see the performance, and the sound was very quiet. Best thing to do, he thought, was talking us through the events and thereby spoiling all sounds coming from the gig. The man just could not be quite for 15 minutes and comment afterwards. I have it on tape in the atic, for those interested. I don't know if this is on any site available, must be.
This is only Vol. 1, Richards, so there's a good chance the Dolly Dots, The Selector, and Harry Chapin end up on further volumes.
DeleteAnd thanks for your radio story, that deejay must have been frustrated!
when I spent near a decade out of work between contract engineering, I would stay up listening to Coast-to-Coast radio and tape myself when I had something to say. I have copies here and there and one time wishing George Noory and Linda Moulton Howe a Happy New Year was fun. Other times, I recorded a show I was at that later was broadcast on the radio like Edge radio mc'ing a Soul Asylum show for our EDGE radio 104. The oldest tapes were from a box type tape recorded held up to a multi-band radio I got from an older brother in fourth grade on songs I had to hear again that were just blowing my mind and then for the Maximum Rock 'N' Roll radio weekend show or other later shows on Radio K college radio like Star Wars or Harry Sheerer (the Simpson's voice out of L.A.) had a show or Universal Buzz Radio out of Rochester, NY to record a Soul Coughing or Cardigans show on the weekends. One memorable experience in my first house neighborhood was going into KFAI community radio to tag along with my neighbor to hear his news blurb he did around dinner time. At any rate, I went directly to the record shelf, puling out Misfits 'Walk Among Us' (first copy I had EVER SEEN to oogle at it as well as many others in that short half hour that were just blowing my mind away such that I don't remember). Thanks for the post art58koen and for your great ideas!
DeleteMany years ago - early 1980s - I used to listen to the grim James Whale show late at night (forgive me - there was nothing else around at the time) on Metro Radio from Newcastle Upon Tyne, I think. One night he had a caller late in the show who claimed he was trying to fine a long lost contact in the north east. Strung the Whale along for a g e s, right up to seconds before shutdown. "One last chance," says Whale. "Is there anything else you can tell us about this guy?" "Yes." says caller "He used to suck my cock." Faders too late to make a difference, but it was 2a.m., so maybe not many listeners.
DeleteSadly, Whale was not sacked, and continued to be "on the radio" for too many years thereafter. Presumably had built-in broadcast delay after that incident.
Does this count as deplorable? I hope so.
My radio memories go way back. London 50s-On Sundays they had 2 Way Family Favourites played to uk soldiers overseas. My dad would sing along to Nat King Cole. London-sixties memory is George talking about Let It Be. I taped it and still have it somewhere. George told how it was just rough recordings where we would hear "the warts and everything". I think it was the Glynn Johns version he thought would be issued. I listened to Kenny Everitt and John Peel, although that is a little hazy. Seventies Moved to the States and spent lots of time in New York listening to WNEW Scot Muni etc. I got a phone call about John and turned on the radio they were playing John nonstop and I knew it was real. I don't listen any more, I miss the times when I listened to the dj to see what he/she liked and not just what was selling. But we all have the memories. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, those were different times. I don't bother listening to the radio either...
DeleteI've still got 40/50 tapes full of John Peel sessions recorded in the 90s/00s. Someday, i hope, i'll get them digitised. One can dream!
ReplyDeleteMake your dreams come true! I thought a lot of Peel Sessions have digitalized already?

I remember way back in the early eighties, the Feedback show hosted by Bernard Lenoir on France Inter featured the Fleshtones' Acoustilog Studio session including a great version of the Shadows of Knight's Shake. I duly recorded it on cassette but the first time I tried to listen to it the tape jumbled into the recorder (it did happen more often than not). As a result, the recording was lost. Still today, I cannot find any trace of those recordings.
J from Europe.
Thanks J! I remember those moments when the recorder would 'eat' the cassette tape, painful... I think I found your Fleshtones session: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYzTOD2ZLa0
