Wanna Build A Car? More Rough Trade Covers

Thanks to popular demand (2 or 3 readers, at last count), here's another 25 songs from the first five years of Rough Trade's catalog. This time there's album cuts as well as singles.

These were the years when Rough Trade could do no wrong, before they got starry eyed over Rowdy Roddy Frame, Green Gart Sidebottom, and that jumped-up pedantry boy from Slaughter & The Dogs. (That's why The Fall left Rough Trade, don't ya know.)

Moz must be over the moon about Brexit. Who makes the Nazis, indeed.

Artists covered include Essential Logic, Swell Maps, the Monochrome Set, Young Marble Giants, Television Personalities, Pere Ubu, the Pop Group, Blue Orchids, Australia's Go-Betweens and Last Words, This Heat, Zounds, the Feelies, the Prefects, and more. What a rouser of a roster those rascally Roughians had!

Thanks once again to WDM at Why Do Things Have To Change for sharing the music of the late great Eric Hysteric. I've got more Rough Trade covers at the ready, just in case this goes viral. Don't the kids just love it?

"Our future lies in the past." Rest in peace, Andy Gill.

  2. Did Green Gartside-Bottom live in his Mum's shed with a collection of glove puppets? Perhaps he did - he really did. THHANK You for this jonder, it will get SERIOUS attention. You are brave mentioning the B word on line. Liverpool voted 60+ percent Remain, around 75 percent where I live. Only really met one bloke who was big on B - but he's moving to Wales anyway to get away from the immigrants. Hmm. This "part-time worker" has already given himself an ulcer as had a few quid on the KC Chiefs to win by 10+ Ma Man Mahomes GOT IT DONE! Just fitted, 50y wait for them 30y wait for LFC. Regards THE MOZZ :-)

    1. I would never have guessed that you follow American footie! You fill your head with cul-cha, you give yourself an ul-sah!

On a serious note, I think people will look back on this past Friday (when the US Senate voted against calling witnesses, and England left the EU) and wonder what the hell our leaders and us voters were thinking.

What a lovely irony it would be if Wales closed its borders to English immigrants. I once met a Christian conservative at a homeschool event who said she wanted to move her family to Finland. I wondered if it had occurred to her that Finland has a 99% literacy rate and might not WANT her teaching her grotty spawn that evolution is untrue and dinosaurs never existed.

    2. Greengart Sidebottom still squats in that shed, reading Derrida (oh yes he Derri-does), but only when his Mum's gone out. He sells DIY puppet kits that come with a detailed breakdown of production costs, addresses of organic cardboard suppliers, and his recipe for vegan papier-mâché.

    1. Thank you so much! I have two more planned. Putting them together has renewed my appreciation for the Rough Trade label, its artists, and the spirit of that era.
