Robert Palmer's 1980 album Clues is one of Stinky's all-time favorites. That makes it a natural candidate for the patented Homemade Live Album treatment.
Stinky searched high and low across the internet, looking for Clues. Three songs eluded him, and are included today in their studio incarnations, as recorded down in Nassau. The rest were cherry-picked by Stinky as the best performances from multiple live sources.
And perhaps it's appropriate, considering that Palmer followed this album with Maybe It's Live, which was a hybrid of new studio tracks and concert recordings of his best known songs. Today's share is rounded out with live versions and remixes of other Robert Palmer songs (19 tracks in all), so it's more of a "Faux Deluxe" collection (as Willard used to call it).
The talented Mr. Palmer produced Clues himself, wrote most of the songs, and played guitar and bass. His choices of cover songs are surprising: "Not A Second Time" (from Meet The Beatles) and Gary Numan's "I Dream Of Wires". Numan and Palmer cowrote the song "Found You Now", and Numan played on the album. Numan's own recording of "I Dream Of Wires" was released in the same month as Clues.
You don't have to buy a clue -- it's free!

Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory with the Wrench?
ReplyDeleteThanks J&S!
Personally, I prefer Professor Plum in the portico with the pipe, but you pick your poison.
DeleteFew people know that Colonel Mustard was dishonorably discharged from the British Army for his aberrant behaviors, but remained a miscreant who thereafter slept in a hole in the road; as immortalized in The Beatles' MEAN MR. MUSTARD. Only his sister Pam could stand him. - Stinky
ReplyDeleteThanks jonder, Robert Palmer is always welcome, looking forward to listen to your compilation.
ReplyDeleteSomething else but related, Lee Perry produced and mixed a couple of his songs of which Love Can Run Faster is the only released until now. I remember seeing announcements on Amazon that these would be released:
Extra bonus tracks for Double Fun 2007 expanded remastered version:
10. You Overwhelm Me (Alternate Vocals) (Bonus Track)
11. Let Me Feel Your Thing (Bonus Track)
12. Love Can Run Faster (Lee Perry Version) (Bonus Track)
13. Love Can Run Faster (Dub Version) (Bonus Track)
14. Best Of Both Worlds (Lee Perry Version) (Bonus Track)
15. So Fine (Lee Perry Version) (Bonus Track)
16. You're Gonna Get What's Coming (Alternate Mix) (Bonus Track)
Do you have any idea about this?
Stinky is the resident expert on Robert Palmer, so I will defer to him. A voice like Palmer's with Lee Perry behind the boards does sound like the best of both worlds! This may be what you're looking for:

Art58Koen: That's the first I've seen of that bonus-laden version of DOUBLE FUN. Luckily Jonder was on it! - STinky
DeleteI still miss Willard. :-(
ReplyDeleteI miss him too. Willard's Wormholes was full of treasures, and the Readers' Links comment section was such a fun place to visit.
DeleteYes, that's the one I saw on Amazon, but as far as I know it was never released... Note that you can't listen to any of the songs!
ReplyDeleteAny subsequent reissues did not have any additional outtakes or bonus tracks :-(
But I was hoping that this 2007 version got released as a promo perhaps.
