Bush Tetras Live Rent-Controlled In My Head

Cynthia! Pat! Steve! Cait!
It's Bandcamp Friday, and you should buy the new Bush Tetras album, They Live In My Head! Steve Shelley produced and played drums. Steve joined Bush Tetras after original drummer Dee Pop died in 2021. Cait "Rocky" O'Riordan is the brand new Bush Tetras bassist.  It's a GREAT record --  Pat Place's guitar is ferocious, and Cynthia Sley's voice sounds stronger than ever.

Bush Tetras debuted on 99 Records in 1980.  They broke up in 1983 but reunited in the mid-90's.  Beauty Lies (1996) was produced by Nona Hendryx. A followup album called Happy was completed with producer Don Fleming, but got shelved.  In 2007, ROIR put out an odds & sods comp called Very Very Happy, which included several Happy demos.

A Bush Tetras career overview called Rhythm & Paranoia was released on the Wharf Cat label in 2021. Beauty Lies, the lost album Happy and the new one are all on Wharf Cat's Bandcamp page now.

As mentioned previously in these pages, Cynthia Sley has a son with Ivan Julian, and the two proud parents made an LP in 1988 (grab that Lovelies album on the Down Underground blog!) Now here we are in 2023, with a new Bush Tetras album and a new Ivan Julian solo album (which you should also buy on Bandcamp today!)

  1. Remember the "Faux Deluxe" albums on Willard's Wormholes? Here's the faux deluxe version of Happy -- the album, the demos, and a radio session:

  2. Thanks brother. Two great posts back to back. Love Bush Tetras. I shared Tetrafied (Henry Rollins/Dee Pop compiled set) over at my dump that has some rare & unreleased recording from 1980 - 1982 (tracks 7, 8, 10, 13 - 16 live). Thanks for Fox Delux :).

    1. Thank you, sah. Have you heard the new one? "They Live In My Head" (the title track) sounds just a little like "Silver Machine" -- or maybe it's all in my head?

For those seeking "Tetrafied", here's Nathan's post:

  3. Been digging "Ghosts of People". As for sounds like, what about "Things I Put Together" reminding of classic Pretenders "My City was Gone"?

    1. Well spotted! Pat Place has an Andy Gill vibe going on "So Strange". My favorite track is "The End".

The 90's era Bush Tetras sound a bit like Scrawl -- and I love me some Scrawl.

  4. Yikes! I've been a bit slow on the uptake (innit), but thank you and Stinky for the Ronnie Spector, and thank you and Nathan for the Bush Tetras.
