In The Mix, Volume 2

[Stinky reminds us...] The goal of the IN THE MIX series is to combine two of my favorite things, music and trivia.  These are tracks that have contributions by famous friends or, in some cases, NOT-YET-FAMOUS friends.  My favorite type are songs where the artist has a luminary lend a hand—and once you’re made aware of their contribution, you can’t believe you didn’t pick up on it straight away—and you can’t UNHEAR it.  The best example on this volume is James Taylor and Joni Mitchell backing Carole King on Will You Love Me Tomorrow.  Honorable mention goes to Sting and Peter Gabriel for lending vocals to Phil Collins’ Take Me Home.

It’s pretty hard to miss Jack White singing/screaming in the chorus of Electric Six’s Danger! High Voltage.  Maynard James Keenan of Green Jelly fame has lent his vocal cords to two to a lot of other people’s songs, which includes Rage Against The Machine’s Know Your Enemy.  Taylor Hawkins supplies drums on Coheed & Cambria’s No World For Tomorrow.  And Marianne Faithfull supplied vocals on Metallica’s The Memory Remains.  Maybe Joe Perry will guest on more records now that Aerosmith are retiring (due to Steven Tyler’s vocal challenges). Joe is featured on Eminem's Sing For The Moment.  Two other hard rockers, Dave Grohl and Rob Zombie, contributed to Puff Daddy’s Shot Caller Mix of All About The Benjamins.

There’s no mistaking Stevie Wonder’s harmonica on Chaka Khan’s I Feel For You.  Or The Jackson 5’s vocals backing Wonder on You Haven't Done Nothin’.  It’s only by virtue of my tireless research for suitable songs for IN THE MIX that I know that Stephen Stills supplied percussion on The Bee Gees’ You Should Be Dancing.  Martha Wash of The Weather Girls IS the hook behind C+C Music Factory’s Gonna Make You Sweat/Everybody Dance Now!

Michael McDonald makes another guest appearance with Steely Dan on Peg.  Michael Stipe lends his distinctive baritone to Billy Bragg’s You Woke Up My Neighbourhood AND Spacehog’s Almond Kisses.  Long time session man John Paul Jones returns to his roots and backs R.E.M. on Miracle, and Chris Martin provides the male vocals on Dua Lipa’s Homesick.

    1. Well spotted, sir. Volume 1 (The 70's) had two parts -- and some songs from the 80's. We aim to confuse!

Readers will know Clare Torry's voice (if not her name) from "The Great Gig In The Sky".

  4. And now I am stuck searching for The Brits, helping each other out only to find some stinking matter. Lemmy (The Lemmy) on The Young And Moody Band- Don't Do That/How Can I Help You Tonight. The B-side is one for the flip-side fanatics. For crying out loud, Lemmy, Reggae.

  5. Huh. Maynard James Keenan of Green Jello fame? Wouldn't he be better known for being in Tool and A Perfect Circle? (Well, maybe for my generation, anyway). But that reminds me of a suggestion for a possible third volume: He sings prominent co-lead vocals on the Loner Mix of David Bowie's "Bring Me The Disco King", a version that completely transforms the original...and is a personal favorite.

And speaking of Bowie, how about him very prominently backing up Placebo on a remix of "Without You I'm Nothing"..?

    2. No, it's the David Bowie of Feathers fame.

PS: Maybe you also know him from his hitmaking years in The Lower Third.

    3. Oh, THAT David Bowie. I wondered if you meant the guy from Arnold's Painful Corns.
