THE BEST OF JERRY LEE LEWIS: Live At Gilley's 1981-1988

Jerry Lee Lewis broadcast five live shows from his cousin, Mickey Gilley’s gin joint in the 1980’s (Stinky writes).  Jerry Lee was struggling with drugs & alcohol when most of these recordings were made.   He’d been hospitalized due to ulcers in 1981 & 1985, and several artists (like the late Kris Kristofferson) went to see “The Killer” to pay their last respects.  Jerry went to The Betty Ford Center in 1986, and one Gilley’s broadcast represented here is from 1988.  Yet there isn’t a huge difference in his lucidity on these tracks.

In my opinion, in an altered state or not, JLL could always put on an amazing show.  It was only in between the songs that you realized he was high enough to punch pelicans; when he leered at women in the audience, or salaciously slurred stories.  He also had a tendency to bark orders at the band during the songs when he’d been imbibing.  “Pick it up, son!”

Lewis is on his best behavior as he runs through songs that were in his live sets since the days of his legendary 1964 live album, Live At The Star Club: Great Balls Of Fire, Whole Lotta Shakin’, and High School Confidential as well as his later favorites No Headstone On My Grave, Chantilly Lace, and Who Will The Next Fool Be?

Some songs are here more than once — because it was too difficult to choose between the versions included — as in the case of the only SLOW version of Great Balls Of Fire that I’ve heard him play, or one of the faster ones.

I own more Jerry Lee Lewis albums than any other solo artist, so it’d seem cruel to make you wait to download this piping-hot comp.  But I’d appreciate it if you’d answer the following question.

I saw four of the early rock & rollers live: Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Link Wray and Jerry Lee.  Who are the earliest rock & roll pioneers that you’ve seen live, and under what circumstances?

ELSEWHERE ON THE BLOG: Stinky's tributes to Link Wray and Otis Blackwell (who wrote Great Balls Of Fire as well as Breathless).  Plus more Chuck Berry covers than you can shake, rattle and roll a stick at.

  2. I went to something called Rock N' Rolls Main Event (1990). Jerry Lee was scheduled to close out the show. They had let Fats Domino do some encores then told Jerry Lee to cut his spot short as they were out of time. Boy was he pissed. Kept kicking his piano stool over but kept on playing.

  3. I used to have quite a JLL album collection; Live at The Star Club, The London Sessions, some Mercury compilations, and once Charlie Records started releasing loads of his SUN recordings (which were previously not available) a few of those...
The one and only opportunity to see Jerry live was in 2005 (in Thailand!) I screwed up due to a severe lack of funds...
That show can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9i8dTSDorM

Fats Domino! I saw him with his band in Amsterdam in a large concert place (forgot the name), must have been in the 1970s. It was a classic hits performance, but the audience was supposed to stay in their seats, bummer...
I used to have a radio performance from another Fats performance in Amsterdam on cassette, which was much better, as due to microphone problems, the band went through a bunch of instrumentals, some pretty wild! Sadly enough that cassette bit the dust years ago, C-120s were great for taping 1 hour shows, but usually didn't last very long...

    1. You can't stay in your seat with Fats or Jerry Lee or... But we had that same law here. My hometown had a no dancing in front of the Jukebox law.
      Damn those kids!

    2. Fats is great live! I have a DVD of the 4 stacked up pianos on the Monkee's special. Fats, Jerry Lee and a couple others. Why can't I remember? My brain hurts. Guess I need to watch it again. Sorry.

    3. Fats, Little Richard, Jerry Lee & that other guy. Where is my brain? Brian Auger.

    4. You found it! Thanks, man! No wonder you couldn't remember the 4th guy -- Brian Auger seems like a random choice. No disrespect to the man or his music, but not in the same League Of Rockin' Piano Legends.

  4. I never saw Chuck Berry. Is that worth anything? When I was a child he came to the nearest city in The Netherlands, where i lived. Supposed to be there at 20:00. Mac Taple opened and played a second set. It all became a bit too late for us, disappointed homewards.

    1. You and Chuck were in the same building, surely that counts for something... Chuck was probably backstage telling the promoters that he wasn't going onstage without cash in advance, as that was his strict policy.

The only rock legend I saw in concert was Etta James.

    2. I saw Bo Diddley performing in what I seem to remember was a school gym in Imola, Italy in the mid-80s. I was a bit worse for wear but if memory serves he played a very short set. But I saw him. I was there. Out of it - but I was there.

  5. Saw Billy J. Kramer in St. Paul at free fest and taped a few songs for my old youtube channel that got lots of surprised comments. Also saw Herman's Hermits play the same outdoor stage there by the river on a separate occasion. Seems a lot of legends played outdoor free shows like Joan Jett and Alex Chilton at block party on Hennepin by Target Stadium in MN. Saw Wilson Pickett/Booker T & The MG's/ Radiators in outdoor show at our minor league baseball stadium (where Bill Murray owned our team and had Conehead day once when I was there) called Midway in St. Paul.

  6. I saw Bo Diddley at an outdoor music festival. I have to confess I was there to see Bonnie Raitt and didn't pay too much attention to Bo. I do remember him rapping at one point and my thinking 'yuck.'
Around 1972 or 1973 I did share a smoke with John Lee Hooker at another outdoor music festival. Interestingly, the only place that city would give a permit was at the landfill so that's where the concert was held. It was called "Down in the Dumps" and I held onto my ticket stub for decades just to prove it (until lost in a fire).

  7. In my early days of music I was into Motown rather than rock. I never got to see any of the legends until later when they were doing Geriatric Tours, so... The first live music I attended was the Four Tops in 1966. The most fabulous show I attended in those early days was 1971 Marvin Gaye. They were covering What's Going On. It changed my life.

  8. Johnny thunders in Belfast, tiny crowd but a great performance

  9. NO: The Four Tops is a GREAT first concert! I saw Chuck Berry in concert--for free after a soccer game--with opening acts Danny & The Juniors, & The Marvelettes (speaking of Motown!) - El Stinkeroo

  10. Pontyboy: When I saw Bo Diddley, he was playing a country bar--backed by a country band--which worked out well, because EVERYBODY knows Bo's music. Thanks for your comment - Stinky

  11. Don't recall seeing any R&R legends; my dad took me to see Lionel Hampton in the 80s -- that was probably the oldest legend I've seen that I can recall. Maybe I saw the "Mill Brothers" once too though I'm not sure it was really the actual Mills Bros. Thanks Stinky! Love the new banner

  12. Thank you for your commend Mr. Dave! I don't know what label to attach to Lionel Hampton, but HEAVYWEIGHT! Glad you liked our SHOCKTOBER banner. There's another one by Koen in the pipe!

  13. Saw Bo Diddley open for the Clash. Are these sourced from the JLL I put up over at VW?

  15. Me too, Draftervoi.

I usually have no idea where I acquired the tracks that I make a comp out of, & that comp was “in the pipe” for a while. I don’t shy away from YouTube if the live track is mindblowing & only available there.

Two of the JLL Live At Gilley’s concerts were chopped up (probably where I got the idea, years ago) for the official release of the same name, & have exceptional quality: https://www.allmusic.com/album/live-at-gilleys-mw0000247692

Keep up the good work over there on VW!
