Medley Madness continues with Stinky's contribution to the series!
Remember when David Johansen first appeared on MTV? It was years before his Buster Poindexter shtick, back when David was promoting his live album with an Animals Medley of We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, Don't Bring Me Down, and It's My Life. Huw Gower from The Records was in David's band, and they were pretty hot! But not enough to make Johansen a household name.
The menu of medleys includes crooners (Bobby Darin, Englebert Humpernickel, and Ol' Blue Eyes), country (The Texas Tornados, Buck Owens, and Travis Tritt's tribute to Ol' Waylon), rock pioneers (Buddy Holly, Richard Berry), harmony singers (The Everlys, The Hollies) and guitar slingers (The Ventures, and a tribute to Dimebag Darrell by Tina S)!
I could go on, but it's all spelled out on the tracklist. Besides, I think I mentioned just about everybody. Well, I left out Neil Young.. and Rita Ora... and Bobby Vee. There, that's all of 'em!
One of the things I've always admired about Stinky's eclectic tastes is that his compilations can go from Neil Young to The Ventures, from there to a contemporary international superstar like Rita Ora, and follow that with an old classic from Frank Sinatra! It's all music, it's all good, and today it's all about the medleys!

ReplyDeleteQUESTION FOR OUR READERS: What's a compilation from this blog that you've enjoyed and would recommend to other music lovers?
I still think this is a great post: https://jonderblog.blogspot.com/search?q=otis+blackwell
DeleteRecommended because it gives a good idea on how things are done here, nicely written up & a well selected bunch of songs!
I think your best is yet to come.
ReplyDeleteIs it december and have I lost a month and a half? Do you present a top ten that we can enjoy around the chrismas tree, with chocolate milk in our new pj's? Do you? Please? On the way back to normal I found this https://www.discogs.com/release/1746050-Johnny-G-Water-Into-Wine 3 of the best medleys ever. No fuss. No "look-at-me". Plain ordinary handcrafted oldschool medleys.
Other kind of medley is Clubhouse - Do It Again/Billy Jean, that started a whole new kind of medley, aka mash-up.
Johnny G... I saw him live in Hilversum!
DeleteThanks, Richard! I thought about mashups too as a form of medley. Some of them are quite enjoyable, but I wasn't sure if they are medleys. Who is the arbiter of what constitutes a medley? And what about the segues that the Deadheads love, that start with one song, segue into another, and then a reprise of the first. All those live tapes with labels like "Sugar Magnolia -> endless boring space jam -> Sugar Magnolia"
DeleteSorry, I don't listen to the GD. So much material. Once you start, there is about half a lifetime there to be spend on listening, comparing, re-listening, discussing the fine points, and accepting they all are worthwhile, and you listen again, but now in the proper order. Which is open for discussion.
DeleteI came to the idea that Clubhouse did it as a medley, because it said so on the sleeve. Now, the biggest whale in the sea, we haven't talked about, is The Mix-CD.
23 million, 456 thousand 789 and a half mix-cd's were released in the nineties alone. Can you call that anything else than a medley.
Thanks to all who commented!
ReplyDeleteMy current favorites from Jonderblog are Jon's Kim Shattuck comp, and KOEN's First B-Sides Comp. I frequently listen to them from beginning to end in my iTunes (rather than individual tracks on random). To me, that's the true test of a compilation--and my goal when I put one together. To use a cliche, the sum is greater than it's parts.

Whoops! I included the wrong link for the B-Sides comp: https://jonderblog.blogspot.com/2024/09/b-side-madness-vol-1-new-series-from.html?m=1
ReplyDeleteI guess it was a mistake to go fishing for compliments. But to the anonymous person who is sending comments about being an "egotist" who doesn't "care about listeners": if we are posting "corrupt files that don't unzip" and "unlabeled tracks", you can either politely request a repost of a specific link that doesn't work for you, or you can continue taking anonymous potshots, which I will continue to delete. Third option: go tilt at someone else's windmill.
ReplyDeleteI really like the mashup of Every Breath You Take - Theme From Peter Gunn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRFrZqTveaI
ReplyDeleteDear Art58Koen, I hope I did not give you an idea, for a mash-up cd. If so, I'm sorry.
DeleteAm I the only one with half the songs corrupted while extracting? STINKY, my hero where are you to save the day?
