Cadillac 23 Tracks

In the vast universe of sound, where rhythms interlace with heartbeats and lyrics dance like fireflies under the moonlight, the Cadillac stands as a shimmering emblem of aspiration, freedom, and the bittersweet tales of life. It is not just a vehicle; it is a vessel that carries dreams, a mythical chariot that traverses the highways of the soul. From the sultry echoes of rhythm and blues to the booming choruses of rock, the Cadillac glides through the corridors of music, embodying desire, rebellion, and the eternal search for meaning.

Classic ChatGPT style bollocks, but the fact remains that the Cadillac definitely has become iconic and appeared countless times in songs – varying from Blues to Rock to Hip Hop, and beyond – either literally or symbolic, take your pick!

From a massive amount of Cadillac songs I cherry-picked 23 tracks and made sure to cover a wide range of styles.

I skipped a few classics (e.g. Bo Diddley’s Cadillac) and in some cases selected a cover instead of the original track (e.g. Boz Scaggs doing Moon Martin’s Cadillac Walk, Nathalie Cole tackling Springsteen’s Pink classic)

While searching for musical Cadillacs I encountered a few weirdo’s, e.g. Guy Drake’s Welfare song which actually is embarrassing, but I doubt many of you had heard it before...

Whereas similar styled compilations tend to focus on older songs I deliberatly added some more recent ‘Cadillacs’ for your musical education, all free of charge!

Question: What's your favourite car song?

    1. As it happens, my favorite car song is the Warren Smith track you've chosen to include in this very compilation! So, since THAT one's already been picked, I clearly have no choice but to suggest five more (all of which are indeed on the older side):

  2. Most of the older ones I like. Maybe it helps that I am becoming an older one myself. Mazdaratti by Mazdaratti. That, for me brought the whole AOR, MotR thing definitely to the scrapyard. Best played loud in the car at night DEFINITELY TAKING DRUGS. Mixed with Spiral Tribe and other greats. Golden Earring – Still Got The Keys To My First Cadillac is a sentimental fool for when you are savely back home. I am aware that Mazdaratti is also 30 years behind us.....

    1. Thanks Richard, as usual I missed that Golden Earring – Still Got The Keys To My First Cadillac completely, otherwise I would have included it for sure, listening to it now, cool!
We are all getting older, but at least have good memories of those classic cars songs...
I doubt if the new generation will come up with a Tesla Boogie or Tesla Walk!

  3. Brand New Cadillac is the best song about this for me. Great version by The Clash, The Fall, The Slickee Boys, The Purple Helmets etc.

  4. If it's Cadillacs, I'd go for John Hiatt's "Tennessee Plates", maybe "Cadillac Ranch", maybe "Willie The Wimp (and his Cadillac Coffin)" as well as the great songs on Koen's excellent comp.

If the question is open to all makes and models, "Hot Rod Lincoln" would have to be there -- wow, so many to choose from! Especially if you include police cars, ambulances and hearses (the "Big Black Mariah"). There have been car songs since the days of the Terraplane and the "Bucket T"!

    2. Stinky's CAR TROUBLE series... I had no idea, thanks Jonder!
BTW, do you think there ever will be a lot of songs about present day cars? Toyota Blues? Pink Suzuki??

    3. Was the Bottle Rocket's "1,000 Dollar Car" in the the car trouble series? The Handsome Family did a nice cover of it too.
Artist Series - The Nude Party's "Hey Monet"

    4. Songs about present day cars? Good question. "Traded In My Tesla"? "Candy-Colored Kia"? I tried to think of songs today that mention a specific brand of car, like the aforementioned "Hot Rod Lincoln", "Terraplane Blues", "From A Buick 6" and Chuck Berry's classic "Jaguar And Thunderbird". A personal favorite is "Drive Me To The Park" by The Embarrassment, which rhymes "operetta" with "Isetta" (a 3-wheeled single cylinder microcar from the 1950's).

  6. I'm surprised by the absence of Vince Taylor's Brand New Cadillac (covered by the Clash). Surely one of the classics you skipped or another cover I don't know.
Besides, the car making firm was named in 1901 after Antoine Laumet, chevalier de la Mothe-Cadillac, founder of fort Pontchartrain and Detroit city in 1701. The guy thought there was a détroit (strait) nearby while there isn't. He actually came from the Bordeaux region in SW France where the Cadillac village is situated. Today there they have France's biggest insane asylum !

    3. It looks like those MF'n links are dead. "Cadillac Walk" was not part of that series because there was no TROUBLE involving the car in that song. To quote the series' creator, "the cars should be rusty, wobbly, or otherwise troublesome."

Nere are new links for CAR TROUBLE Vol. 1: https://pixeldrain.com/u/ktgTvrA9
      and Vol. 2: https://pixeldrain.com/u/bcryr868

I just double checked the links for my MOON MARTIN compilations, so if you want to hear "Cadillac Walk" performed by its composer (and a hot cover version by Cub Koda), cruise over to https://jonderblog.blogspot.com/2020/03/moon-martin-songbook.html

    1. That's a nice (bootleg) compilation but here at JOKONKY we follow only 1 rule, no posts of existing albums, at most a Deluxe Edition (with additional tracks, etc.), but that's it. Any attempt to break that rule will have serious repercussions, like waking up one morning and finding remnants of your vinyl/cd collection covered in blood next to you...

    3. But but but I added extra tracks! Please don't hurt my record collection! My wife has more than once threatened a bonfire worse than the one that followed John Lennon's comment about the Beatles being bigger than Jesus -- and she knows where I live!

    5. Lennon was in the right, not so sure about you. He was bigger, larger and taller than Jesus, and if that's not enough, compare shoe-size!

Dizzy Gillespie – Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac

    8. And how do we know who was taller? Jesus was a Middle Eastern carpenter -- not the pale and skinny little hippie depicted in churches and museums. In a bare knuckle fistfight between JL and JC, my money's on the man from Nazareth -- and I don't mean Dan McCafferty!

      Delete
    9. He was a son of a carpenter. My father was a potter, but all his children are crap at it. And further, when he's not that pale skinny little hippie (more likely a jewish/palestinian little man, for people were shorter 2000 years ago) I think a Scouser could beat the crap out of him. Jesus would turn the cheek, and down in two blows, but on the third he'd rise again. Jury's decision.

      Delete
    10. Good one. People were shorter and lived near the water -- how could I forget? Still, I'm not sure any God-fearing man would willingly fight Jesus. He'd send his dad after you!

What about Lennon vs. McCafferty, then? The Scotsman KO's the Liverpudlian within 4 rounds, I'll wager.
