THE BEST OF BOBBY TENCH VOL. 1 & 2

THE BEST OF BOBBY TENCH VOL. 1 & 2

BOBBY TENCH was vocalist/rhythm guitarist in the band GASS when Jeff Beck chose him to replace Rod Stewart in THE JEFF BECK GROUP in 1970.  In ’71, he played guitar with Cream’s drummer Ginger Baker under the pseudonym Bobby Gass.  In 1974 & 1975, he joined guitar god Freddie King for his Burglar & Larger Than Life albums.

Next was a stint with CHAPMAN WHITNEY STREETWALKERS with whom he did two Peel Sessions that are represented here.  Tench then recorded with the band Hummingbird, & former Mott The Hoople/Spooky Tooth guitarist Luther Grosvenor’s band WIDOWMAKER, and BOXER.

If he stopped there, Tench would have had an impressive career—but in 1978 he joined VAN MORRISON’s band for the album Wavelength and sixty-two live dates which included the 1979 set recorded and released as Van’s Live At The Roxy album.

To start off the 80’s. Tench joined a little band called HUMBLE PIE for their last two albums On To Victory, & Go For The Throat.  He released two singles, Still In Love With You on Stiff Records, and Chain Gang on Germany’s Line Records, and played on The Clash’s Topper Headon’s Waking Up album.

Along the way, he also played on albums by The Wailer’s Junior Marvin, Eric Burdon, Alan Price, Axis Point, & Hanson (not that Hanson).

There are cuts by most of these bands on this two volume set: THE BEST OF BOBBY TENCH.

  1. Downloaders are asked to answer the following question:

Can you name another recording artist who joined groups replacing TWO more-famous musicians/singers?

  2. Thanks Stinky, never knew that Bobby was that active!
Regarding your question, hard one to be honest, but I have a variant...
Many years ago (pre-internet!) I remember reading in the Bangkok Post that CCR was going to drop by in Thailand for a few shows which surprised me a lot as I knew that Fogerty had gone solo earlier. Careful rereading revealed that the band in question was Creedence Clearwater Revisited!
This concoction was put together by former CCR members bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford in 1995, all they lacked was a lead guitarist & vocalist.. Since then they've had 3 (or more?) different vocalists already: Elliot Easton, John Tristao, & Dan McGuinness... In a way this version of CCR has become a karaoke band...

  3. Thanks, Koen. I always thought that Elliot Easton & CCR were a strange combination, but Easton can play anything. He's a gnarly guitarist whose lone solo album GHANGE NO CHANGE is a gem--most of the songs are written by/co-written by Jules Shear!

  4. I usually start off with MY answer to the question I've posed, which I left as a "lob ball" for our first commenter. Since comments are scarce, here it is:

Timothy B. Schmit replaced the SAME more famous musician TWICE. He replaced RANDY MEISNER in POCO, & THE EAGLES.

  5. Streetwalkers....Streetwalkers EVERYWHERE!!! Your labeling Stinky just may throw me off now that I know of multiples on that name. Kind of a cheat since this is a hard one but Zander Schloss replaced Roger Rogerson of Circle Jerks and then (here's the cheat) Dix Denney who was actually founding guitarist of the Weirdos but DID play bass on last album Condor (along with Flea & Cliff Roman) then Zander started in 2004.

  6. Kid Congo on guitar replacing Brian Gregory in the Cramps circa 1981 and then Ward Dotson in the Gun Club. Then again he replaced whoever in Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I just realised the guys Kid replaced were hardly more famous than he was ...

  8. I can always count on Viacom & Anonymous to take a stab at the questions I pose. It's very much appreciated, and you served up prime examples! Bryan Gregory HAD to be hard to replace in THE CRAMPS because he also LOOKED the part! And "Zander Schloss" is just fun to type! If we had any no-prizes in stock, you'd each get one.
