LOOSE! VOL. 7 - The In & Out Crowd
The LOOSE series focuses on what goes on when the lights go off—and sometimes what comes off! These are songs about the ins & outs of romantic entanglements.
There’s no shortage of cover bands milking misaligned music styles, but The Cleverlys are a cut above other bands who do unusual versions of rap songs. Look no further than their bluegrass treatment of The Shape Of You. Richard Cheese rigorously revamps the rap classic Gin & Juice (and should probably have to give Bill Murray a cut of his royalties). Atlanta Georgia’s The Coolies deconstruct Cecilia which (regular readers know) gets my vote for the dirtiest song to ever hit the top ten. Dread Zeppelin does the same until the juice runs down their leg in Lemon Song.
When The Stray Cats returned rockabilly to the charts, lots of artists rushed through the door they kicked open with their brothel creepers. Few had as pure a pedigree as Billy Burnette who was the son of rockabilly royalty. His uncle and his father and were the songwriters Johnny & Dorsey Burnette of The Rock ’N’ Roll Trio fame. His Rockin' With Somebody New is proof that proud parentage doesn’t protect you from infidelity. Chuck Berry showed he had some gas left in the tank, and some stink on his finger with his live version of Reelin' & Rockin’ from the film American Hot Wax.
Making their first appearance on JOKONKY are The Carpetbaggers. Cincinatti’s favorite sons serve up Sin Now, Pray Later. There’s an undercurrent of infidelity in this installment, as R.B. Greaves, Cher, & Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show are done dirty by their significant others. The blues aren’t always about being cheated on… Big Joe Turner, Big Maybelle & Barbecue Bob are all bragging about the good lovin’ they’re getting.
While he came across as a southern gentleman, Tom Petty was a rock star for his entire adult life, so he definitely got up to some getting down. He suggests the children leave the room for his live rendition of Hang On Sloopy. Question Mark & The Mysterians were a rocking’ live unit from the mid-sixties into the mid-nineties. In later years, Question Mark sang his original lyrics for I Need Somebody, replacing you captivate me with you masturbate me.
Prince was known for his Dirty Mind, and when Rick James asked a girl to Give It To Me Baby he was persistent. Richard Berry flat out insisted that his dates be into the hereafter. In Oh, Oh! Get Out Of The Car, he makes it clear that if his date isn’t here after what he’s here after, she’s going to be here after he’s gone!

Downloaders are asked to sing for their supper by sharing with us the best single or album you ever bought soley because your gut told you to.
ReplyDeleteI’ll go first. I had a mail order catalogue with an extensive list of imports and singles available by a wide variety of artists. On a hunch, I added to my order a single by Barbecue Bob & The Spareribs Lookin' For A Girl/No Such Luck. The A-Side became one of my all-time favorite songs (and is track 17 on this collection!)

I recently bought an EP by Barb-B-Q-Barnes & The Rib-Tones -- no relation, I suppose...
DeleteThose Who Do Not by Psychic TV. The title alone, I just had to have it, without listening. Expensive 2LP. But totally worth it. One of the best albums ever made.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing, Stinky, did you ever use Professional Widow? Seems pretty suggestive to me. or Ellen Ten Damme - Plattgefickt or ixi (she has 3 great songs) Detlef, Knutschfleck and ich xxxx dich
Nice picture on the album! Thanks for this.
ReplyDeleteDesmond Dekker "The Israelites," I had no idea...at all...and still may not, tbh.
ReplyDeleteThanks. My gut buy was Incredible String Bank 5000 Layers. I heard something about a Beatles connection and I like the cover. First time I played it I wondered what was going on! I later learned to love it especially First Girl I Loved.
ReplyDeleteSongs: Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co. Saw the cover and thought is was interesting and loved the album
ReplyDeleteWow, I love what everyone shared.
ReplyDeleteLemonflag, I checked out The Incredible String Band's First Girl I Loved, & it's great!
Hi Richard, I haven't utilized those tracks, but one of your suggestions: Give Your Dick To Me by Barbara Markay is included on the NEXT volume of LOOSE!
Becks Dark has good taste, as does Anonymous. Thanks for turning me onto Magnolia Electric Co.
Eric, I had that Desmond Decker's Israelites 45 when I was a kid--but the reggae single that got played more was Jimmy Cliff's Wonderful World, Beautiful People.
Jon: No relation, but Barb-B-Q-Barnes & The Rib-Tones and Barbeque Bob & The Spareribs would make a great double bill.
Bob Barbeque was someone from The Hague. with Willy Would-Be and Agaath they were a trio. inspired by Trio. They made two singles Bla-Bla-Bla and Schwere Wörter. Both b-sides are worth an effort (on utube). Barbecue Bob will not join to make a triple bill. He sadly passed away in 1995
DeleteI believe the first Barbecue Bob to make a record was a 12 string acoustic blues guitarist from Georgia USA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbecue_Bob
DeleteThanks Stinky for this new compilation.
ReplyDeleteMany years ago I spotted an unusable album cover in a junk shop, it showed a negative black & white closeup of a face with a hat and glasses i.f.o. a microphone stand with an atom bomb explosion cloud in the background, the title of the album was in shocking pink... At that time I was not really familiar with the artist but I bought it on the spot. I never regretted buying John Cale's Sabotage/Live, fantastic album!
Hi, I can't find Loose! Vol. 1. Have I missed it? //Roffe
ReplyDeleteDan Hicks and His Hot Licks - Where's The Money? I thought "humm... looks interesting". It was.
ReplyDeleteMaybe for another volume, a subtle tune: Hellroys - Sodomy By the Lake.
What a cool way to be introduced to John Cale, Koen! - Stinky
ReplyDeleteHere you go, Roffe!
ReplyDeleteC90 (where launched the LOOSE! Series) has become a private blog--so here's a link to LOOSE! Vol. 1:

Do you have a memory to share with us of a a record you bought because you had a HUNCH it was good?
Hi, I remember the first album I bought: It was Eric Burdon & The Animals- Winds Of Change. It turned out great!!!
DeleteHello !
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for your great compilations & pretty kool covers !
Could you give me the years of Chuck Berry & Question Mark live Tunes.
See you soon.
Hello !
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for your great comps !
Please could you tell me the years of chuck berry & question mark tunes
Thanks, Berni, and look for The Hellroys Sodomy By the Lake on a future installment. I've already finished Volume 10, so it might be a while, but it's a perfect fit for LOOSE!
ReplyDeleteAnother contender: Hickoids - Driftwood 40-23
DeleteHi Jean-Antoine:
ReplyDeleteThe year of the Chuck Berry track is 1976, and it's taken from the soundtrack of AMERICAN HOT WAX (a film about DJ Alan Freed). Chuck Berry was youthful enough to play himself in the movie, and he re-recorded the songs for the film. I believe the Question Mark & The Mysterians track is taken from either the band's 1998 live release ACTION, or 1999's MORE ACTION. You really can't go wrong with any of their records. Even the 1997 self-titled album they cut of STUDIO re-recordings of their songs (because the original albums had gone out of print) on the Collectables label.
Thank you for stopping by! - Stinky
Hi Richard---Thanks for commenting. My Barbecue Bob (Ira Spinrad) is still alive and well, & living in New Jersey!
ReplyDeleteYou know this better. My question is this. Is Barbecue Bob & The Spareribs a bandname like Alice Cooper? That is, there is no Alice nor Bob? It was only later that Vincent Furnier became synonymous with Alice Cooper.
DeleteThey might be able to make a party, Barbeque Bob Maglinte, Ira Spinrad, Barb-B-Q-Barnes, Concertina player Barbecue Bob and a lot of Barbie Q babes
This Barbecue Bob is a New Jersey musician, ROBERT POMEROY, who has played with his backing band The Spareribs since 1981. I incorrectly identified him above as IRA SPINRAD— who's the guitarist in the group. I HIGHLY recommend their AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL which contains the track from this comp: Looking For A Girl.
