Here's a collection that does what it says on the tin: women singing songs of the Rolling Stones. Merry Clayton sang on the original recording of "Gimme Shelter", and here she makes the song her own. Ruth Copeland was an early member of Funkadelic. In addition to her dramatic reading of "Play With Fire" on today's comp, she too sang Gimme Shelter (with Eddie Hazel on guitar and Bernie Worrell on keys).
Tina Turner, the Pointer Sisters, and the ladies of LaBelle are here, as well as Ann Peebles (a version of "Miss You" with that classic Hi Records sound).
Some of the performers have been forgotten by all but the crate diggers and connoisseurs of deep soul and rare funk. Does anyone remember Blinky, Margie Miller or Capricorn Records artist Maxayn? All of them are excellent singers.
I honestly didn't expect much from some of these covers, but was pleasantly surprised by Odetta, Jennifer Warnes, and the Fifth Dimension (with a credible "Moonlight Mile"). There are some powerful voices here, and I hope you enjoy the songs as much as I enjoyed putting together this compilation.
And what better way to end your week than with yet another trio of Triple Song Titles! Get ready for some 1950's pop (Wow Wow Wow), where swinging Richards (Little Richard and Richard Berry) rub shoulders with squares like Doris Day, Danny Kaye, and the Andrews Sisters!
Then there's Weed Weed Weed (dancehall, reggae, highlife, etc), which is a collection of Afro-Caribbean songs about gardening and lawncare. Many of these were contributed by Richard, but even he will find a couple of surprises here.
Finally, we have Kom Kom Kom, a set of pop songs in other languages. Once again, Richard has traveled far and wide to find these schlager, chansons and novelty tunes. (If any genres are tagged incorrectly, it's my mistake and not his.) Raise your glass or spark one up as a toast to Richard!

Thelma Houston's version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" is also excellent. It wasn't easy to choose between her and Marcia Hines. The horns, the guitar, and the backing vocals gave Marcia's version the edge. Linda Ronstadt's terrific "Tumbling Dice" would have fit perfectly with the other Exile On Main Street covers, but that would have pushed the set past 80 minutes.
ReplyDeleteSame with Bette Midler's "Beast Of Burden", Aretha's "Satisfaction" and Esther Phillips' "As Tears Go By"...
ReplyDeleteGreat Stones cover collection Jonder, thanks! How about a 2nd volume where you can add those already mentioned in your comments plus a few more?
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to downloading this one at the office first thing Monday great idea Jonder and bravo Richard a wealth of music knowledge for us like you Jonder even caught a few I have ripped there. Have a relaxing weekend Johnny Krew!!!
ReplyDeleteYou too, Patrick!
DeleteAnd Marianne Faithful's excellent Sister Morphine. DW
DeleteNote that Marianne Faithful recorded both As Tears Go By & Sister Morphine twice in the studio and all versions are great!
DeleteI just found this interesting post which mentions a few more female covers:
http://www.richieunterberger.com/wordpress/obscure-1960s-rolling-stones-cover-versions/
Cool! I didn't realize that Richie had a blog. I did listen to Rotary Connection's “Lady Jane” but didn't like it. "Salt of the Earth" by Rotary Connection seemed like a better cover version, at least to my ears.
DeleteMarianne Faithful occasionally dabbled with a stone or two
ReplyDeleteMarie Laforet - Marie Douceur Marie Colere (Paint it Black)
Nena - The Last Time
Linda Ronstadt - Tumbling Dice
Melanie - Ruby Tuesday
Thank you, and also for the lovely bunch of triples
Thanks. 80 mins? Does anyone still burn cd's?
ReplyDeleteI think it's just me and Stinky! But it has become the rule we live by...
DeleteSome of the bloggers who "reimagine" albums follow a 45-50 minute limit, so we're not entirely alone. :-)
Ha! No sir, me too!
DeleteThat's why all compilations over at my place also have an 80 minute time limit.
Then again, I feel like one's attention to music starts to wane around the seventy minute mark, so I think that 80 minutes is a pretty good cut-off mark.
If you have way more music, just make it two volumes of about sixty minutes.
I am probably also one of those bloggers up there, whose reimagined vinyl era albums effectively won't go longer than 50 minutes. Reimagining isn't science fiction! ;-)
Looks great, Jon!
ReplyDeleteLike Richard, I'm a fan of Linda Ronstadt's version of Tumbling Dice. I see that, and raise him Bette Midler's FANTASTIC rendition of Beast Of Burden!
I feel the CD-length boundary keeps our collections from being going down rabbit holes, and serves to trim away the fat. Lemonflag. Hey, if cassettes can come back, why not CDs?
Thanks for this! I still use CDs for home consumption. I, like many (I suspect) remember Maxayn from one of those old WB loss leader comps.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're with us on the 80 minute format, Psychfan! I don't think new cars are sold with CD players anymore, just USB and Bluetooth.
DeleteLooks like Maxayn (along with LaBelle and the all-female rock band Fanny) appeared on BURBANK (the 2LP WB loss leader). And as it turns out, Maxayn ALSO recorded a version of "Gimme Shelter"! https://youtu.be/FG44oURNd24?si=Twa1IN2ucs_xEVjh
I realized how out of step you are as a CD holdout when I had to buy a new car in 2016 (almost a decade ago!) and was told that the nice versions of the car would only have USB slots. CD players were for poor people! Ok, poorer people, given the price of a car (don't even compare that to now, where entry-level cars at entry-level prices have absolutely vanished from the market), but still. If you wanted to buy a car with a CD player, you specifically had to order the most basic version from the factory, as no car at the dealership would even have the quote-unquote cheap crappy versions with CD players...
DeleteIt miffed me mightily. Before, I could take any CD from my collection on a whim, depending on the mood. Now I had to copy CDs to a computer, then put the files on a stick. Makework! In the name of progress and 'making your life easier'! Yeah, fuck off with that!
You still buy cd's?
DeleteMusic is a strange thing. the external part. In 1925 people made a few 78s (2 sides of 3/4 minutes), maybe once or twice a year. After WW2, when the 33rpm came we got greedy, wanting more. In the 60s and 70s the companies poured out albums regardless of quality. Half a million country albums can't all be great. We are spoiled, and making it the standard. Then came the cd (and the cd-rot as I have some) It was better (sold for twice the money, though cheaper to produce). Easily over an hour, box-sets, oceans of music. But now I see artists giving a celebration for they have 1 New Song out. You don't need two on a single, 12 on an album. You can work three years to complete an album, stretching the time. I see, they don't make money on record/download amounts, money comes from everywhere else.
To give oneselves a measure, there are 3 Golden Rules, or as I would call them Three Holy Unbreakable Golden Standards (THUGS).
*) No complete albums, just homemade compilations.
**) 80 minutes or less per item
***) Each law may be broken by the Jo, the Ko and / or the Nky
Yes, our compilations occasionally exceed 80 minutes. I think we've only posted complete albums when it's a homemade Deluxe Version (what Willard used to call Faux Deluxe). And yes, I do still buy CD's. Just this past weekend, I bought two Nomeansno CD's, one by Hum, and one by Uncle Green (an ATL band from the 80's) for $2 each. And I received 2 more CD's in the mail from Amoeba Records (Rhoda Dakar's latest, and and an old For Against CD).
DeleteThe question was somewhat rhetorical. I didn't have a cd/dvd player for years, until I moaned about it amongst friends, and, presto, one was given to me. A plug-&-play for my pc. I stopped buying when it was almost bankrupting me. Second hand stuff should be cheap. The prices for a 70s 7" can be stupid. I know they are rare, ungoogable, not on discogs, spotify or utube, and rarety drives up the price. There are no decent 2nd hand stores around here, anymore.
DeleteThey too have found out about the interweb and sell halfdecent goods for double reasonable money. Most even have a no-entrance area where the internet goodies are. What's left are hundreds of compilation albums of hits, best of the kids singing hits, ecuador panflutes, new-age wannabe's.
I'm guilty! I used to adhere to 80 minutes but now that I don't have a burner nor a CD player in the car there didn't seem to be any need for constraint other than attention span. Now I generally do 20-25 tracks and there's so much music that it's sometimes hard to stop at that.
DeleteThe used record store in my town doesn't even use price tags, they just look up the current rate on Discogs at the checkout counter.
DeleteSonia - aqui en mi nube (1966, spanish Get Off Of My Cloud)
ReplyDeleteLULU - surprise surprise , if you need a banger for volume 2
GIRLSCHOOL - live with me (another banger from one of the best all-female rock bands)
Ellen Foley - Stupid Girl
Janet Jackson - What'll I Do (it's a jagger/richards, but is it a stones song)
That's a fantastic version of "Live With Me" -- thanks, Richard!
DeleteI buy CDs! 1 euro per disc at flea markets or charity sales. ... and my car radio has only CD and no USB
ReplyDeleteI got most of my weekend CD purchases at a flea market. I drive a 10 year old car with a CD player and USB. CD's have excellent fidelity, and my car speakers sound better than anything I have at home.
DeleteI have car speakers, I don't have a car, but I have car speakers, no woofers, I don't like woofers, eating up 50% or more of the sound. BTW I only have one working ear, so all the stereo sonic hi-fi wizzardry goes beyond me, no use.
DeleteIn Thailand I buy my CDs second hand and in Holland I usually get some at Kringloop (recycling goods) shops... Whenever there's a flea market, I'll probably check it out! BTW, I don't have any car, only a bicycle, no CD player either...
DeleteInspired post! Great comps! Thank you!
