THE RUSS BALLARD SONGBOOK - And then I wrote...

British guitarist/singer/songwriter Russ Ballard has an incredible body of work.

Ballard started his recording career as a member of Adam Faith & The Roulettes.  Like Cliff Richard’s backing group, The ShadowsThe Roulettes were also a stand-alone recording unit.  Among others, Russ wrote Me Body for his band, &The Lost City for The Shadows (when he was 14 years old!)

Ballard & drummer Bob Henrit left The Roulettes, and briefly joined Unit Four Plus Two, and Ballard supplied them with Concrete & Clay.  The pair played together for years until Bob Henrit replaced The Kinks’ original drummer Mick Avory in 1984, continuing with the group until their split in 1996.

Next, the two joined The Zombies’ leader Rod Argent in Argent—which was a fertile songwriting period for Ballard.  He wrote God Gave Rock & Roll To You, and Liar while he was in the band.  Three Dog Night’s live version of Liar starts things off here, & God Gave Rock & Roll To You was later covered by Kiss.  Kiss members covered several of his compositions.  One that didn’t make the cut was Peter Criss’ version of Let Me Rock You.  Ace Frehley recorded both New York Groove, and Into The Night (which did).

For this collection, I used the original version of New York Groove by Hello, a song Ballard wrote in the studio—something he rarely did.  Ballard tended to approach songwriting as a job—something he got up and did every day.  He was signed to publishing deals that required him to write 20 songs a year; which his output easily met.  And, after singing lead on the hits he penned for Argent, it was only natural that Ballard would go solo, releasing eight solid albums on major labels between 1974 & 1985.

While he never missed a step as a songwriter—other artists covering his songs generally had the bigger hits.  Carlos Santana scored with Winning two years after Russ released his version.  Since You Been Gone was covered by both Head East & (Ritchie Blackmore’s) Rainbow.  It was impossible to choose between Rainbow’s version—and The Brian May Band’s live version—so both are included.  May’s vocal is fantastic, as is his guitar playing.

But Ballard’s songs didn’t just attract guitarists.  Some amazing singers snatched up Ballard compositions:  The Zombies’ Colin Blunstone, Ian LloydRoger Daltrey, and both Frida & Agnetha Faltskog of ABBA.

Two of Ballard’s most valuable copyrights are also here; America’s You Can Do Magic, & Hot Chocolate’s So You Win Again, which was a much bigger hit in Europe than the U.S.  Along for the ride are Bad English, Night Ranger, Rare Earth, Tokyo Blade.

Is there a song you were surprised to learn was written by a songwriter whose work you thought you knew well?

For me, it was RED RUBBER BALL by The Cyrcle which I didn’t know was written by Paul Simon.

(If you can stand a little more trivia, they were managed by Brian Epstein, & John Lennon supplied the strange spelling of their name).

    1. Cool! I included Hello's "New York Groove" and Russ Ballard's original "Since You Been Gone" back to back on one of my recent "As Heard Here First" comps. Most recently, I was surprised to learn from Koen that Dan Hicks wrote "I Scare Myself"!

Back before the internet put everything at our fingertips, there were a lot more of these surprises. As a teenage fan of The Rezillos, it seemed inconceivable that "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight" could be a Fleetwood Mac song. At the time I was ufamiliar with FMac's roots as a blues band.

  2. Au contraire. I loved the song Godzilla vs the Space Mutants by Safe (real name Tony Menzies) both on the 7'' Skin as on Tekno Acid Beat by Psychic TV. Later I found the Godzilla - Volume cd (Godzilla real name Andy Higgins) containing the same song. Never looked back, thought they were the same. Only recently found out they are two different persons. It has always been a chaotic fun going though the PTV related stuff. I still don't know what to think of it. I still like the cd (and the 7'')
I liked Metal - Mike/Dix Ans Ont Passé a 7'' My brother had that has been long lost. Searching through Ballard's discogs list I found it again. Never realised that was his

  3. I confess that I didn't get through all four of the recently posted AS HEARD HERE FIRST comps, yet, Jon.

Akron's RUBBER CITY REBELS also covered Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight. Recording "new wave" versions of songs by "the old guard" were one of my favorite parts of that trend.

I used to work with a guy who was obsessed with Dan Hicks, so I got a thorough education in his catalogue up to that point. He eventually swayed me when it came to HICKS, but I never embraced his other passion: The Rossington Collins Band.

That Ballard wrote: Mike/Dix Ans Ont Passé was news to me, Richard!

I always liked Psychic TV's album covers! They were positively Psychotronic!

  5. I caught my own mistake while listening to a documentary about Argent. The song HOLD YOUR HEAD UP was actually written by (former Zombies) ROD ARGENT & CHRIS WHITE. If there's an outrage--I can easily swap another track for it--but it really fits in terms of the flow of the compilation. Let me know how you feel about it, and please don't let my incompetence reflect poorly on my partners in this blog. I acted alone, and take full responsibility. What can I say? I STINK. :)

  6. I am not angry, slightly disappointent. I, and I speak for myself, wanted you to come forward on your own terms, in your own time. With your head right low, humble, trembling lip and all, you asked for and are granted the soap of forgiveness.
You let Jon down, you let Koen down, you let the assembled hordes of followers down. U-Reek-Ah
