Lenny Kaye's compilation album Nuggets (Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era) has had a massive influence on rock music in the decades since its 1972 release. In a 1980 interview with Trouser Press Collectors' Magazine, Lenny provided a detailed history of Nuggets, and he explained why it would be difficult to assemble a second volume (which finally appeared last year). Scroll down to the third article at this link to read the interview.
Stinky has shared over two dozen Homemade Live Albums on these pages, and I've assembled a few cover albums. Today's share is a set of covers of 25 of the 27 songs from the original double LP, plus a second set which includes all the songs I could find from Nuggets Vol. 2 (some of Lenny's choices are quite obscure), as well as covers of songs from the Nuggets series on Rhino Records. Some of the Nuggets songs also appeared on my Steppingstones compilation of punk versions of garage rock, psych and glam.
There are some punk bands in today's sets, as well as groups from the garage rock and psychedelia revivals that have occurred since then. The first revival included American bands like The Cramps, The A-Bones, The Chesterfield Kings, The Cynics, DMZ, The Droogs, The Fuzztones, The Hypstrz, Plan 9, Plasticland, The Slickee Boys and The Turn-Ups (led by Billy Synth, who compiled the Psychedelic Unknowns series). Across the Atlantic were The Barracudas, Cannibals, Nomads, the Medway bands, and "side projects" like Naz Nomad and The Purple Helmets. I'm sure I've forgotten some.
I've got half a dozen leftovers filed for a third volume, so leave a comment if you have any recommendations! And if you enjoy various artists compilations, be sure to visit Nothin' Says Somethin', as Nathan Nothin' is featuring VA comps all month!

The two songs missing from vol. 1 are "Respect" (which is itself a cover) and "Sugar And Spice" (I couldn't find a cover version, only The Searchers' remake).

DeleteI realized that the v2 I posted yesterday contained a FLAC file among the mp3's, as well as a track ("Open Up Your Door" by The Scenics) with a lot of surface noise that I couldn't remove. I replaced it with The Romantics' version of "Open Up Your Door", which is longer. In order to keep the whole thing under 80 minutes (based on our INFLEXIBLE BLOG RULE), "Green Fuz" was moved to the folder for the upcoming Volume 3.

ReplyDeleteThanks! There is a "Sugar And Spice" cover by The Icypoles, but it is only available on the deluxe edition of "Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations", and I had already used several tracks from that album (A Public Execution, An Invitation To Cry, Moulty, and My World Fell Down).
DeleteThe Sinners - Open up your door (Swedish band on the Original Sin singles comp LP).
ReplyDeleteThe Prisoners - 96 Tears (British band on the Lost Hits Skydog comp).
The Cramps - 5 years ahead of my time (on the Voodoo Rhythm bootleg only I'm afraid).
All great versions.
J from Europe.
Thank you, J. Just browsed The Prisoners' discography. Looks like the kind of band I should get to know!
DeleteI went with Plan 9's version of "Five Years Ahead Of My Time", but it was also covered quite well by The Nomads, Leaving Trains, Chesterfield Kings, and Monster Magnet. I bet Lux & Ivy tore it up.
Great Artyfacts job Jonder!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to find the best songs. Timely too because I didn't look, but was thinking all those Pagans songs are so classic that some of them MUST BE covers right?!!?
ReplyDeletePagans did "Little Black Egg" (the last track on vol. 2) and a terrific version of "Heart Of Stone" (which I included on PUNKS SING STONES). A couple years before Mike Hudson's death, a new Pagans record came out (Hollywood High, 2014) which included a great take on "Detention Home" which I included on my post of Dead Boys covers. Wish I could have seen the band (as you did), because BURIED ALIVE is one of my favorite records. Boy, could Mike sing good.
