By now you’d have thought we’ve exhausted posts about Robert Palmer, after Expanded Editions, Jukeboxes, and a Song Book, there shouldn’t be much (if anything!) left, right?
Nope, you’re wrong, besides his regular songs and albums, he was also active as a producer and musician, either playing guitar/bass/percussion/singing backup, or more…
As a result, I took another deep dive inside his discography to see what I could come up with and found quite a lot:
The Only Ones > vocals & bass
Talking Heads > percussion
Desmond Dekker > production, instruments
Marie Léonor > production & vocals
Peter Baumann > production
Joe Cocker > backing vocals
Moon Martin > production
Rupert Hine > vocals
Will Powers > brain storming!
Cristina > production & all instruments
The Comsat Angels > executive production & vocal
James Brown > vocals
Hugh Marsh > vocals & reading
B. J. Nelson > production, vocal & instruments
UB40 > vocals
May Lan > Work Arranger, Composer
Black > vocals
Brent Bourgeois > vocals
Chaka Khan > vocals
Brooke Allison > production & instruments
Frantic > vocals
Carl Carlton & The Songdogs > backing vocals & instruments
Norico > vocals
Mel Gaynor > > vocals
Be prepared to be surprised!
p.s. The download includes a pdf with full details of the songs included in this double CD compilation.

ReplyDeleteQuestion: What is your favorite song collaboration/production from a well-known artist outside his/her regular body of work?
Superb work sir! This looks a real treat/deep dive into Palmer associations. The effort that must have gone into this - very commendable. I'm looking forward to spending quality time with this. I've been a long long term Robert Palmer fan and thought that I knew a lot about him and his recordings, but I've learned so much more from this site. Thanks very much and keep up the good work!
DeleteWe do our best Sixtyacres!
DeleteThank you Koen. When I learned about Robert Palmer, many years, eh decades, ago he was a fun-guy, a-n-ice guy. Best of both world? Double titles double fun?
ReplyDeleteAnyway I got older, didn't like The Power Station, grew a moustache, became snobbish and Vinegar Joe was the real deal. There, I have put him away, and even his early death was no reason to take a look at 's mans oeuvre. Well Done Koen, to prove me wrong about such a versatile artist. Very happily exploring the world of Robert Palmer.
I have said it before. Hans Dulfer with Pandemonium, Gavin Friday with Aidan Walsh, Pierre Henry with Spooky Tooth. Recently AIWE split the two musical segments and gave Spooky Tooth a version without the great Pierre Henry and he also did the same and presented the electronic compositions of Pierre Henry without the rock sounds of Spooky Tooth.
My webpage crashed so this might be a double comment
No worries Richard, all good!
DeleteThanks so much for the Palmer material.
ReplyDeleteThanks. John Lennon Harry Nilsson, George Harrison Badfinger. Not quite outside.
ReplyDeleteGood ones lemonflag!

DeleteVery great, and proves the ultimate god-like status of our lord and saviour Joey Ramone.
DeleteHowever great this is, it kinda opens the box to unexpected covers rather than out of the box collaborations.
Thank you James for this
It is the reverse of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLqVioiDldc&list=RDWLqVioiDldc&start_radio=1
I love it, James!
DeleteMore info; B. J. Nelson was a backup singer who had worked with Robert before, including singing a duet with him on Heavy Nova’s “Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGlwRO-CboQ
ReplyDeleteThat same video also has a few snippets of her & Robert talking about her solo album.
Great work, Koen! Ace Records should release this superb collection.
ReplyDeleteThanks johnny P, that would be something indeed!
