IN THE MIX Vicki Peterson Edition Vol. 2. My musical mash note to VICKI PETERSON continues.
On Vol. 2, there are more BANGLES tracks Vicki sings lead on, which include two of my favorite songs by the group; James, and Crash & Burn. Their amazing early track Want You is here along with More Than Meets The Eye, I Got Nothing, Lay Yourself Down, & Get The Girl (Live At The House Of Blues). There’s even Make A Play For Her Now which Peterson co-wrote with Vinnie Vincent (formerly of KISS!)
In the early days of THE BANGLES, the whole group supplied backing vocals for HOODOO GURUS. Vicki & her sister Debbie sang behind MATTHEW SWEET, and Vicki backed STEVE WYNN & GIANT SAND on her own.
Vicki Peterson seems to love to be in a group, and there are tracks from her bands; THE PSYCHO SISTERS (with SUSAN COWSILL), THE ACTION SKULLS (with John Cowsill & Billy Mummy), & CONTINENTAL DRIFTERS. And of course a cut from her newest & highly recommended release Long After The Fire (with her husband, JOHN COWSILL).
Long After The Fire is available on bandcamp as a download, a CD, or on vinyl: Vicki Peterson & John Cowsill
Response to Vol. 1 was positive, so I’m following it with Volume 2!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for all the comments on the first installment. It’s much appreciated.
Downloaders are asked to share a band that exceeded your expectations LIVE IN CONCERT.
I wrote (when I posted Vol. 1) that THE BANGLES surprised me when I saw them, after they reunited.
Another one was THE VAPORS who took 29 years off between albums, & contained only songwriter/lead singer DAVID FENTON from the original group. Adding to my trepidation was the inclusion of his son, Dan, in the line-up. But despite all those red flags, they were GREAT!

In the 80's a friend had an extra ticket to see The Stray Cats. I was a fan, but had a college final the next day. I was not that excited to see them. It ended up being a fantastic show. Spent over half the concert pushed against the stage. Great live band.
ReplyDeleteThe Stray Cats really are a great live act. I've seen them many times. The first time they were opening for J. Geils when CENTERFOLD was all over the airwaves. They were both fantastic!
DeleteI think we all want to know how you did on that final...
Thanks for this mix. I was fortunate enough to see Vicki and John Cowsill back in November in a small club literally down the street. They were a group that far exceeded my expectations, putting on a great show with just the two of them, considering they very rarely play together.
DeleteBiggest revelation was the first time I saw Richard Thompson live back in the late '80s. I knew his music but had not known how much he lets loose and draws you in live. Seen him over 25 times since then and never a bad show, with a band or solo acoustic. Not for you if you're looking for a rave up, but always great otherwise.
Thanks for the thumbs up on Vicki & John, AND Richard Thompson, JPB in DC. I've listened to a lot of Thompson's live shows--which I enjoy--but I never got off the couch & went to see him in person. I think you've convinced me to do so!
DeleteI saw The Exploited a few times. Once early 90s they were not great. Too lame, blasé. Next time they were in a small youth centre. I knew the people there and they knew I had a car. Could I be so kind and get The Exploited chips and steak? Yeah, they phoned a few places, and off I went. They had there food and afterwards they performed like maniacs.
ReplyDeleteThank you for weighing in, Richard. Sounds like The Exploited are powered by BEEF! ;)
