IT'S ABOUT TIME! Vol. 1 contains songs about seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, & years!
People are impatient these days. Comedian Kathy Ladman used to joke that her dad would stand in front of the microwave saying: “C’mon! I don’t have all minute!”
Across the 23 tracks on this first installment; Gene Vincent, Dave Dudley, & Ron Wood are marking time.
Lucinda Williams, Richard Hell, & Hank III are questioning their past, and Sam Butera, & Elvis Presley are looking to the future.
Pink Floyd, The Blasters, and Stevie Ray Vaughan & Jimmie Vaughan warn us that time is running out.
Whatever your philosophical view—one thing is certain—this compilation will kill about 79 minutes (or 4,740 seconds) of your time. We at JON-KY feel it will be time well-spent.
It takes err... TIME to put comps together, & we’d appreciate you taking a second to comment (or join the conversation).
ReplyDeleteWhich actress/singer most QUICKLY grabbed your attention, & why? One per customer, please.
I’ll go first. This collection includes a track by actress/singer/songwriter EMILY KINNEY (best-known for her role on Walking Dead). I became an INSTANT fan when I first heard her music. Her lyrics are savagely witty, but her voice is downright sweet sounding. She always has great production, too!

Thanks Stinky, I vaguely recognised the name but hadn't connected Emily Kinney with The Walking Dead (ah, poor Beth!) I will investigate further!
DeleteThe one that grabbed my attention - and I'm pleased to have been introduced to - is Los Microwaves. Although I'm a fan of electronic / new wave, these completely passed me by. Looking forward to hearing more.
DeleteNice to see you back, Khayem. I love that early "weird for the sake of being weird" new wave stuff, too.
DeleteI have a series I began for my own amusement a LONG time before I was blogging (thanks to Jon) that I bet you'd like.
It's called HEY! CHECK OUT MY CHEESY ORGAN! & it's up to around 170 volumes. Eventually I'll probably post them here! Tons of stuff like Los Microwaves.
I've toyed with STARTING with volume 170 just to spin out the completists! ;)
Nice new category eh Stinky THANKS! When I saw my old MN local guy Dave Dudley on there instantly thought of Red Sovine, "Days of Me & You"...."time keeps slippin away, minute by minute each day, some things that I wanted to do, I just didn't get around to, and I've wasted the days of me and you". that was from memory now the next verse: Over and over and over, I wished I'd taken more time, doing things with you, I'll never do again" anywaze back onto the question at hand...mmmm I'm a big vocal fan but quickest album buy when I heard Doc Dart from the Cruxxfxxks because of his totally in your face singing style....akin to later band Deformo that took our Radio K scene by storm and I saw up close at a show rockin' out total maxxxx
ReplyDeleteDoc Corbin Dart -- a unique voice to say the least! The first singer to instantly and completely blow my mind was Boolah from the Milwaukee post-punk band AMA-DOTS. A female Beefheart? Something of a Nina Hagen influence? I was bewitched and enchanted by the band. This video gives you some idea:

Great concept, Stinky! "Those Three Days" could also fit on "Take That" as Lucinda Williams taking a swipe at Ryan Adams.
Thanks for weighing in, VCMD!
DeleteI always wondered WHO that song was about, Jon. There are lots of live versions--so I'll definitely add a slightly different version to my TAKE THAT! folder!
DeleteNice Comp. Maybe one about about 'Doin' Time'? BMinNZ
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion, BM in NZ!
DeleteThis timeless category could go on for a long, long time.......thankfully.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the series DO tend to go on FOREVER around here, Afredd!
DeleteI'd join in the conversation, but...I JUST DON"T HAVE TYME!!!
ReplyDeleteNice one, Nathan!
ReplyDeleteIt should only take minute to look up the spelling of thyme. As in "who knows where the thyme goes?" If only people would slow down and use their time more effectively.
ReplyDeleteI meant to do a comp of songs about SPICES--but there was a typo--and I just went with it!
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw your post, the line 'Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin' slippin', into the future" popped up in my mind...
ReplyDeleteGood one! I've set aside some interesting cover versions of FLY LIKE AN EAGLE for future volumes.
DeleteFlowering thyme, green thyme, mint thyme and my favorite, space-thyme . and further, I second lemonflag's comment
ReplyDeleteThere was one artist that shook me and my family. And I will exaggerate here, The first appearance on our tv was Native Love (step by step) in october 1982. I loved that sound, that electro pulse high energy. I did not care about the persona on screen, but my older brother yelled, He, it's a he, He, a He, while pointing at the screen, looking to my mom and back, and my mom yelled my father in, and He was totally off, and shouted that it should be forbidden, it's a disgrace, filth, and all the time, my little brother crying in the corner.....Divine
Divine was one of a kind!
DeleteGreat selection Stinky - much obliged. I think that the first actress that doubled as a singer to seize my attention was Jane Horrocks. Her covers album 'If you Kiss Me, Kiss Me' is a diverse, inspired choice of songs, reinterpreted in an imaginative way. How many chanteuses would select Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, The Fall, Gang of Four etc as a covers project, when they were known primarily for singing standards from the 50s & 60s? Her delivery of Joy Division's 'Isolation' is worth a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeztiD5JTL0&list=OLAK5uy_naNLD4qW6naVWBKYqNo8c9BDtc5SL946M
ReplyDeleteThanks for turning me onto JANE HORROCKS, Hal. I only knew her as a comedica actress--and she's a great singer!
