IN THE MIX Vicki Peterson Edition Vol. 3
IN THE MIX Vicki Peterson Edition Vol. 3 starts off with one of the first songs Vicki wrote with her Banglemate Susanna Hoffs: Hero Takes A Fall. There are other studio & live tracks from The Bangles including Ask Me No Questions which Debbie Peterson sings lead on. Also included are tracks from Vicki’s duo with Susan Cowsill; The Psycho Sisters, and two Giant Sand tracks for which Peterson provided background vocals.
It features cuts from her wonderful album with John Cowsill, Long After The Fire, & their previous project, ACTION SKULLS with Lost In Space’s Billy Mumy of Barnes & Barnes fame!
In the years The Bangles were apart, she recorded with Continental Drifters. There are a couple of live performances, as well as Vicki performing with The Records’ John Wicks at a 2014 concert.

ReplyDeleteVol. 3 has a cut by Action Skulls that features child star BILLY MUMY of LOST IN SPACE fame.
But my vote for best ACTOR TURNED MUSICIAN might go to his OTHER band BARNES & BARNES who gave the world the Dr. Demento classic: Fish Heads.
Who gets your vote for the best ACTOR TURNED MUSICIAN? I suggest we aim for people who rose to prominence as an actor--even if they were musicians first.

Nice one Stinky, thanks. Regarding actors > musicians, 2 Jeffs come to mind; how about Jeff Bridges (2011 country album) & Jeff Goldblum (he did 4 jazz/standards albums with The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra).
ReplyDeleteBoth solid choices, Koen! I think I read that Goldblum paid the bills by playing piano in bars when he was a struggling actor. Few artists get to do anything as creative, or challenging, for their "day jobs".
DeleteBilly Connolly, first a welder, then a musician and a comedian then also an actor and a painter. He is top.
ReplyDeleteThanks Stinky
It's possible some readers don't realize that CONNOLLY was in a music duo with GERRY RAFFERTY of STEALERS WHEEL & Baker Street fame! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z9ROW9oAG4
ReplyDeleteJenny Lewis, for sure. From The Wizard, Troop Beverly Hills and holding Rose's teddy bear hostage on Golden Girls, to indie rock royalty.
ReplyDeleteJenny is a great example, James! Thanks for weighing in.
DeleteThe star of Crossing Jordan is a pretty good singer/songwriter. Saw her at Rusty's Surf Ranch in Santa Monica sitting in with Billy Mumy's band ( with Mel Ferrer on drums!). Also at Rusty's saw a band with Laurence Juber, Alex Ligertwood, Gary Mallaber (good enough, those) with star Trek's black vulcan as leader.(I don't know anyone's name...look 'em up!)
ReplyDeleteThe star of Crossing Jordan was Jill Hennessy, and Mel Ferrer was also in the cast. Tim Russ was Tuvok.

Ricky Nelson was probably the foremost!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, Mr. E! You've earned a NO-PRIZE: https://www.mediafire.com/view/gh1ihqh5gw6l2d5/Marvel_No-Prize.jpg/file
DeleteMay I add one more, Brigitte Bardot
ReplyDeletePerfect, Richard.
ReplyDeleteBilly Bob Thornton
ReplyDeleteGood one, Farquhar Throckmorton III. Nice to see you slumming! :)
DeleteAll this time I've been waiting for someone to mention William Shatner. I kid! The actor Peter Capaldi released his first album of music recently, and there are several Viggo Mortenson albums (from back when he was married to Exene).
ReplyDeleteA number of rappers have become actors (Mos Def is one of the best at both, imho). Tom Hardy is one of the few actors who has credible rhyme skills, and as "Frankie Pulitzer" he will face off against Czarface again next month! Looking forward to that one.
But my vote for best goes to Dwight Yoakam. He was creepy and chilling in "Sling Blade", and deadpan funny in "Logan Lucky". He also wrote and directed a film that I haven't seen called "South of Heaven, West of Hell". The cast included Billy Bob Thornton, Vince Vaughn, and Bud Cort; as well as Warren Zevon, Pee Wee Herman and Joe Ely!
Dwight is one of my favorite recording artists--especially his stuff with Pete Anderson on guitar!
DeleteHere's a great movie that didn't get the attention it deserved (imho):
RED ROCK WEST
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105226/
From iMdb: "The film would sit on the shelf for almost a year and eventually came to an agreement with Columbia/Tri-Star Home Video for the video and cable rights. Then a movie theater owner in San Francisco asked for the film to be shown in his theater and Columbia/Tri-Star agreed and much to the owner's surprise, the film was making money and selling out despite the fact that the film was on home video and appearing on cable. The film would eventually be shown at the 1993 Toronto Film Festival where it received great reviews and still did not get a distribution deal with any major studio, but still was very successful."
Dwight's hit single, A Thousand Miles From Nowhere, is used during the film's closing credits - the version used is a studio demo recording that's nothing like the version on his This Time album.
This one? A Thousand Miles from Nowhere (Acoustic) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDWkzKPVHlw&list=RDaDWkzKPVHlw&start_radio=1
DeleteThat very well may be the version, Koen! I got that info from iMdb, & it's been a while since I watched the movie. Thanks for tracking it down.
DeleteThank you both! "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere" is one of my favorite Dwight songs. He isn't the only musician in Sling Blade: Vic Chesnutt and Col. Bruce Hampton also appear
ReplyDeleteCapaldi was in punk bands as a wee lad, one of 'em with Craig Ferguson!
