SPECIAL GUEST Vol. 2
This edition of SPECIAL GUEST includes some great pairings: David Bowie & Cher, Joe Walsh & Sheryl Crow, Donovan & Crystal Gayle, Kris Kristofferson & Brenda Lee, and Don Henley & Patty Smyth.
And we can’t overlook Kevin Ayers & Sid Barrett, John Cale & Chris Spedding, Carl Perkins & Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr & George Harrison, John Waite & Eddie Van Halen.
Some readers may not know that longtime Pat Benatar guitarist/husband/producer Neil Giraldo produced & played guitar on Rick Springfield’s biggest hit Jessie’s Girl. That’s what landed him in the garage rehearsal space of YouTube sensations Middle Aged Dad Jam Band. Fellow YouTube big shot Daryl Hall is joined by Cee Lo Green for a fantastic version of Daryl’s own I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do).
Nikki Sudden & Captain Sensible teamed up on Iggy’s Kill City for the Greg Shaw tribute album, and were ripe for the cherry-picking. Mick Jagger slums with The Red Devils, & Robert Plant does the same with Lil' Band Of Gold. Country Joe receives an upgrade from The Fish to The Bevis Frond. And my favorite piano pounding shit-kicker Jerry Lee Lewis duets with his cousin Mickey Gilley during a show at Gilley’s!
The cherry on top is the cover art featuring RITA MORENO with ANIMAL (from an appearance on The Muppet Show). Wearing a Halston Dress, 'natch!

ReplyDeleteI’m wondering what’s your choice for the BEST MUSIC VIDEO with a special guest?
Extra credit if you share a link to the video you’re championing. One per customer, please.
I’m a sucker for RONNIE SPECTOR, so I’m gonna go with EDDIE MONEY’s
Take Me Home Tonight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aJvIFK9-xk
And on Letterman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up6uL6xgoC4

Cool stuff! I didn't know that Captain Sensible played the guest with Nikki Sudden! That's a damned swell map!
DeleteWhen David Bowie appeared on SNL in 1979, he brought Klaus Nomi as a backup singer. For the encore (Boys Keep Swinging), David appeared as a shirtless marionette. During the closing guitar solo, there was an EXTRA surprise guest appearance from Little David (popping up above the waistline of his loose puppet trousers). UNCENSORED VIDEO: https://dai.ly/x3r36se
Another special guest, Jimmy Destri Keyboardist of Blondie performed in David Bowie's SNL performance in 1979. You can see him when Bowie performs The Man Who Sold The World.
DeleteBest regards
Zippy
Well spotted, Zippy! I neglected to credit Joey Arias as Bowie's other backup singer. Joey was dressed in red, and Klaus Nomi was in black.
DeleteYes, good eye, Zippy and thanks for weighing in--it is appreciated!
DeleteNice one, thanks again Stinky. You probably have this one already, but Rockpile joined on stage by Robert Plant for Elvis Presley's "Little Sister" is pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteMusic VDO guest: Jools Holland at times joins his guests for performances on Later With Jools, can't think of any outstanding one right now....
That ROCKPILE performance is a good one, Koen. Thank you.
DeleteIt would also fit in with my CLAMS, FLUBS, & SQUEAKY DRUM PEDALS series because, at the very end of the song, someone in the band doesn't realize they're ending & sings really loud: "Little Sis..."
If you want to spoil your enjoyment of NEEDLES & PINS forever--here's how to accomplish it:

Mine is a live cutout from a concert. I do not like Coldplay at all. and i do not like the song Fix You . When I was watching The Best Of Glastonbury a few weeks back. I was making tea when Coldplay was put on. When I came back, I nearly dropped my cup. I started watching, hardly listening. welling up on the sight of Micheal J Fox, crippled with Parkinson's Disease, sitting in his wheelchair, playing a guitar with, and being played for by Coldplay - Fix You.

i agree with Koen when it comes to Jools. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsuW3dg7Q90&list=RDEsuW3dg7Q90&start_radio=1
There is only one and true correct answer.
ReplyDeletePaul McCartney, in Tracy Ullman's video for "They Don't Know," of course.
Fun trivia, which I didn't know for a long time - that Kristy MacColl, who wrote and originally recorded "They Don't Know," singing "babbbbyyyyy!" on Ullman's hit version, because Tracy couldn't hit that high note.
I always thought that the "babbbbyyyyy!" sounded like it was dropped in--but I didn't know it was Kirsty MacColl herself!
DeleteThat bit of trivia fits into a new series I'm working on PERFECTLY, James--so I'll thank you here, & please accept this no-prize:

Sorry, I posted two links. The second is a reaction on Koen' mentioning he could not choose. Their are so many outstanding ones, one is just spoiled for choice.
ReplyDeleteI chose the Jimmy Clif one, for it touched me emorionally, and again, a song I always dismissed, until when I saw it on Later. He comes on, dressed in this screaming red suit, only a piano, a bass and a drum. And enters like only the very best can.
No worries, Richard--BOTH of your choices were emotionally charged!
ReplyDeleteMind blown right from the first song Stinky--which I hadn't heard!!! WoW so many cool ones here anyways I immediately think of Golden Smog with their never sure of line up when Jeff Tweedy joined in full swing after seeing him with their debut performance at First Ave as WILCO but missing the whole Uncle Tupelo thaaang (except by osmosis with an old girl friend who was nuts about them!). I have personal footage of two shows with Golden Smog that are thee best--one at Grand Old Day and the other some huge street fest that I got from a buddy. The songs I would say are my fave with Jeff 'stepping in' are Glad & Sorry and the song Ill Fated (oops, that was the one on my personal footage where Dave Pirner steps in to take the mic and nails it!!!! That is a better example because he played with them very rarely since Danny boy his right hand man from SA was always there like Kraig Johnson from Run Westy Run. Jeff's classic is 'Walk Where He Walked".. Sorry no example showing Pirner maybe I will post my footage someday and make a buck (doubtfull too ill fated ha-haaa!) Here's a show link from those sets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZnIsGLOADA&list=RDxZnIsGLOADA&start_radio=1
ReplyDeleteOnce again, our musical tastes align, VCMD. I love all those bands, AND all of the versions of THE FACES (whose Ronnie Lane wrote Glad & Sorry).
DeleteOOH LA LA is one of my favorite albums--and not just for the cool cover!
Mumford and Sons & Baaba Maal https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tVP1zc0LKooSM6Nryw0YPSSTkpMTEpUyE1MzFHILc1Nyy9KUUjMS1Eozs8rBgBJ0Q86&q=baaba+maal+mumford+and+sons&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS1176US1176&oq=baaba&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqDAgDEC4YQxiABBiKBTIGCAAQRRg5MgYIARAjGCcyDAgCEC4YFBiHAhiABDIMCAMQLhhDGIAEGIoFMgcIBBAAGIAEMgcIBRAuGIAEMgwIBhAuGEMYgAQYigUyBggHEEUYPdIBCDg4NzBqMGo3qAIAsAIA&sourceid=chrome&source=chrome.ob&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:7d0d4bdd,vid:eCIHPdx1OAs,st:0 Wow that's a long link!!! Anyway waych till 2.14 for it to kick into gear.
