Get Petty!!

I'm not naming names, but this skinny young singer with lanky blond hair was a native of Gainesville, Florida. In the mid 70's his band came roaring up Highway 441, like waves crashing on the beach. Their music was influenced by power pop (and its primary antecedent, the British Invasion), but played with a Southern accent.

The songs rang brightly with the sterling sound of Roger McGuinn's 12-string electric guitar, with a lyrical persona drawn from Del Shannon: a heartbroken loser who got lucky sometimes.

As another talented singer named Tom (brother Smothers) once said, he was a man with many faucets. Stinky focuses on two of them in today's Homemade Records: the psychedelic side, and the rockabilly side.

If you were raised on The Beatles and Elvis Presley, your ears would be well-attuned to these influences; but it's the sign of a true songwriting talent to transform and transcend those influences, and create a sound that is uniquely identifiable as your own. That he did, over a four decade career.

Stinky selects both original compositions and cover songs. A couple on the rockabilly side are performed with Carl Perkins, and the psychedelic side also ventures into garage rock and soul. Dig in!

  2. Have anyone else had issues with your new DL site?
ESET has posted numerous warnings prior to allowing DL's.

    1. TBH, Stinky uploaded it there and I didn't move it. I can put it on Mediafire or elsewhere if people are leery of Bayfiles.

  5. @Mr. Dave - Amen, brother. Jonder made some great suggestions for the COUNTRY side of TP, which I've assembled, and which I put through my rigorous testing process (I took both volumes on a long drive yesterday). In putting the COUNTRY side together, there's now another volume of the ROCKABILLY side! Watch this space. - Stinky

    1. I do the same thing: test drive mix CD's in my car. What will we do when they stop making cars with CD players? Looking forward to more TP!

  6. There's no better place to really listen to how a batch of songs hangs together than the car. Fewer distractions. When I rent cars, I sometimes take along a thumb drive with a couple of my mixes on them. - Stinky

  8. Here are new links for these two compilations:

I have enough tracks set aside for a volume 2 the other two: The Blues Side & The Country Side of Tom Petty.

For The Rockabilly & The Psychedelic sides, I have JUST enough tracks--as those trickle in, I'll eventually do a volume 2 of them all! :)
