Bangles: Live All Over The Place

Here's the latest in the series of Homemade Live Albums (in which Stinky chooses one of his favorite LP's, seeks out the best live performance he can find for each song, and assembles them in the original album's running order).

Stinky's done this with the first three Georgia Satellites albums, Robert Palmer's Clues, Bruce Cockburn's Dancing In The Dragon's JawsStateless by Lene Lovich, and the first two LP's by Joe Jackson

Today he presents The Bangles' first long player, All Over The Place. It was released in 1984 and preceded their big hits, but it's packed with great songs like "Hero Takes A Fall" and their lovely version of Katrina And The Waves' "Going Down To Liverpool". The other cover song on this album is "Live", which was written by Emmitt Rhodes.

The rest are original compositions by Vicki Peterson and Susannah Hoffs. Susannah, Vicki, and Debbi Peterson take turns singing lead vocals. Bangles bassist Michael Steele joined the group in 1983, after the departure of original bassist Annette ZilinskasThe current Bangles' lineup includes all four original members (Zilinskas, Hoffs, and the Peterson sisters).

"Tell Me" dates back to 1983 at the Cathay de Grande, and "Dover Beach" is from 1984.  Other live performances are from after the band's 1998 reunion, including a version of "Restless" with Kathy Valentine on bass Stinky rounds out this collection with a few demos and bonus tracks, including an acoustic "Hazy Shade Of Winter" and a rockin' version of "Pushin Too Hard" sung by Debbi.

  3. Thank Stinky & Jonder! I was really into the Paisley Underground scene (before it was named such) and their first EP as The Bangs was on heavy rotation along with The Salvation Army (pre 3 O'Clock), Dream Syndicate, and Chesterfield Kings in MrDave's bedroom circa 1981-82. Got to see them play at a nearby high school gymnasium (Rolling Hills High) around the same time as the Cathay de Grande show featured here and spent many a weekend night at the Cathay de Grande in the early 80s. Good times! Thanks again!
